I was going to ask something similar just the other day, I was looking at a BBC top ten Welsh guys... I'll try and find it out...
This was done within a few days of when Calzaghe retired mind (so it may be a bit bias). BBC lists are not always that great anyway... It took a long time, but Joe Calzaghe's stellar career eventually won him recognition on the world stage. He continued a great tradition of Welsh pugilists, following the likes of Howard Winstone, Jimmy Wilde and Jim Driscoll. So where does Calzaghe stand in this pantheon of fighters? Take a look at our top 10, and click on each name for more detailed information on the fighter. This content is protected 10: Johnny Owen 9: Jack Petersen 8: Colin Jones 7: Tommy Farr 6: Percy Jones 5: Howard Winstone 4: Jim Driscoll 3: Freddie Welsh 1=: Jimmy Wilde 1=: Joe Calzaghe There's a documentary on YT about Johnny Owen as well, who I didn't know a huge amount about. Johnny Owen is a sad tale, but a sympathy top 10 pick for best Welsh fighter. If he were still alive, I suspect he would be the first to tell you he is not in the top 20 after the Pintor fight, let alone top 10. He deserves more respect than a cheap pop or afterthought....
