As soon as a modern fighter amasses a 120 fight winning streak I'll stop "over rating" Robinson.

As soon as a modern welter wins a world title at LHW I'll stop "over rating" Hearns

As soon as a modern fighter spends 82 nights in the belly of the beast, and on the 83rd night, steps into his 4th division, takes on an undefeated monster, and puts on one of the greatest shows in the history of boxing, I'll stop "over rating" Arguello.

    Get my drift?

natural means natural...cotto is 5 foot 7. how many welterweight are 5 foot 7? he settled into welterweight.....still doesnt make him a natural welter... cotto has fought at welter for only 2 years....
hearns first 35 fights were welterweight
leonards first 7 years - welterweight...

The guys in the 1980's did fight everyone, so you know how they did against other greats. Mayweather you just do not know. I get the feeling Mayweather is fighting Manny because he thinks he can beat Manny easily on size. Mayweather wouldn't be fighting him for the challenge.

I got your idea. For me natural weight is the lowest weight you can make without being drained. Cotto has the best resume at WW after Mosley from the active boxers and he can not make 140. That makes him a natural WW for me. Yes he is not the most rangy one but you can not please everyone :)

Todays fighters would compete just fine....they definitely can beat some of the past greats but will lose some too.

    Look here is my opinion:

Today's fighters have outstanding training, nutrition, and the ability to "pick" fights better than in the past. It is much more of a business today which is bad in my opinion. With that being said, how would the modern day fighters fare? Probably very well. The main difference is that there would be a potential for more losses due to the best constantly fighting the best instead of "occassionally" fighting the best.

One extraneous variable though is the psychological effect being undefeated has on a fighter's mentality and training. Good, bad, I don't know. It depends on the person. It is ignorant to think that the modern day fighter's training and nutrition advantage would be non-existent with discussing these hypothetical situations. That would also beg the question how would the previous era fight if given what we know now today? This then would beg the question...would they too protect their records and body's by picking and choosing fights predicated more on a business model? See the slippery slope?

At the end of the day this is philosophical and no one can say person A is right or wrong because it is opinion at best.

Just because Roy jones jr (i know not a ww) or mayweather jr may not have fought the best competition ALL of the time, does not mean that they would not compete well with past greats. I think it just boils down to the political climate of today's boxing scene....they fight the way they fight, train the way they train and promote the way they promote based upon the current holistic modal of boxing in 2009.
