I thought that 154 and up were 10 oz, 8 oz for below 154 (Quiroga-Anifowoshe infamously used 6 oz gloves in their tragic 1991 fight at 115). I remember Foreman talking about DLH-Vargas which was at 154 and saying "now we know why DLH wanted 10 oz gloves" and others saying that Foreman once again was off, because fighters at 154 are supposed to use 10 oz anyway.
depends on the fighters, if they agreed on 8, then its ok. But both are considered "small welters" then i dont see a problem if its 8oz.
Arum fought tooth and nail to get Vegas to allow 8 oz gloves for the Cotto-Margarito fight last year. Vegas now allows any weight at or under 147 to wear the 8 oz gloves.
No, it's 8 in most states... As far as I know Nevada is the only state that has the option for fighters all the way down to 135 to wear 10 oz. gloves if they choose to. The rule came around after the death of Leavander Johnson at the hands of Jesus Chavez.
I was looking it up. It seems that Nevada uses a special rule to use 10oz gloves from 140 up while everywhere else uses them from 154 up. But if both parties agree boxers are allowed for the use of 8oz gloves at 140 and 147 in Nevada.
When the rule 1st came out I read it was all the way down to 135 and it was mandatory at one point, but I also read that they've since ammended the rule so it's now an option not an obligation.
Whatever the rule is now in Nevada, fact is 8 oz. gloves are standard practice for welterweight fighters so don't let anyone lead you to believe this fight will be extra lethal or anything. When the contracts were being written up, Floyd was simply trying to get an insurance policy here by wearing the biggest gloves possible in order to minimize Pacquiao's power. De La Hoya did the same thing in his fight versus Fernando Vargas.
no officially welter weight gloves are 8 oz, junior middle and below are 8 and middle and above are ten, technically, however fighters below middle wieght can choose to use 10 oz's if both fighters agree
everywhere except nevada it is 8 oz gloves. nevada it is mandatory 10 oz. unless BOTH fighters agree to 8 oz.
It's pretty amazing...the difference between getting hit with an 8 oz glove and a 10 oz glove. ****in' **** sucks. At the same token, the ****in' result you get when you crack someone with an 8 oz glove is astonishing. I go from having a guy hurt to putting him on his ass. 12 oz gloves are just fun period. You still get rocked, but nothing servere. No serious swells or bruises. But yes. Standard WW gloves are 8 oz.
The rule is 10oz gloves HOWEVER if both parties agree, they can wear 8oz, in NEVADA. That that is still only valid for certain weights. tp://boxing.nv.gov/New_FAQ.htm Question: What are the gloves sizes based on the boxer/kickboxer's weight? Answer: Athletes (boxers/kickboxers) weighing-in up to and including 135 pounds must wear 8 oz. gloves in competition, while athletes weighing-in over 135 pounds (junior welterweight class and above) must wear 10 oz. gloves in competition. However, athletes weighing in over 135 but not more than 147 pounds may wear 8 ounce gloves in competition if both athletes agree to do so in writing.
I walk around at about the same weight as Floyd and Pacquiao and I train with 10 oz. gloves and I can't believe they'd make men our size fight with gloves that big at a proffesional level where the entired objective is to hurt your opponent. Nevada's rule was a clear over-reaction to what happned in the Chavez - Johnson fight and IMO it puts welterweights and lightweights at a clear knockout disadvantage compared to the other divisions.
