It just shows how many people really know boxing on here , 140 and above 10oz , anything below that is 8oz, unless both boxers agree, 12oz for heavyweights , Cotto /Margarito was 8 oz due to both parties agreeing , Manny always insists on 8oz gloves , when he fought hatton it was the first time hatton had wore 8oz in a title fight .
That is probably the whole wrangling about the weight and why there were talks of Mayweather asking that it should be above 147 - to avoid 8 oz gloves. If the fight is above welterweight, then automatically, it becomes a 10 oz and not negotiable.
this exerpt is from the ibf rules. seeing how hatton was the ibf champion at 140 it pretty much discounts your statement that the first time he wore 8 oz gloves was his fight with pac. also no mention of 12 oz. and the rules of the british boxing board of control state the exact same thing. section 3.23 http://www.bbbofc.com/documentation.php WEIGHT OF GLOVES: Effective September 1, 1986, the weight of gloves to be used in title bouts is as follows: 108-154 8oz; 155 and above 10oz. Also, effective January 1, 1987, all IBF/USBA title bouts must be fought with gloves that have attached thumbs. There must be a "backup" set of gloves at ringside should the main gloves get torn.
When I was in training for my first fight, I always wore 16oz gloves for sparring. When fightnight arrived I was handed these 10oz gloves. I couldnt beleive the difference in firmness. I won clearly enough but I dont think it was a good idea to show the gloves for the first time 10min before my fight. I always spar with 16oz still. No need to be putting real hurt on my mates.
