    According to Large Dan:

*Floyd Mayweather retired in September and when the WBC vacated his welterweight and junior middleweight belts three weeks ago at its annual convention the organization announced it would hold tournaments in both weight classes to determine the new titleholders.

The format for the tournaments has not been announced and there has been no time frame or a number of boxers slated to appear in each field set.

But the tournaments apparently will happen and on Thursday the WBC announced that the welterweight bout between former junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) and Robert Guerrero (33-3-1, 18 KOs) would be part of the 147-pound tournament.*

...... Interesting. Can't wait to hear who else is involved. Any rumors?

If its PBC-only need apply, I imagine Thurman stands a good chance to be involved .

Either Lara by UD, or Maravilla by highlight reel KO.
But as much as I like Martinez, I guess it's 60/40 in Lara's favor.

edit: damn wrong thread... it's not a smartphone it's a stupidphone (or a stupid user )

Not sure whether that would preclude him or not. It very well might.

The tournament will either be all Haymon fighters (and being that it has Danny Garcia in, don't expect it to include Khan, Porter, Thurman or Spence) or it will come apart politically when a Haymon fighter has to fight a decent none Haymon fighter, so don't get too excited.

Is this a resurrection of the planned/scrapped/postponed/in-limbo "Jose Sulaiman Cup" that was in talks early in the year?

The idea was to have a tourney determining the WBC champ at both welterweight and junior middleweight anticipating Mayweather's then-imminent retirement when both titles became vacant.

The bracket at 154lb was meant to be:

    John Jackson vs. Dennis Laurente
    Yudel Jhonson vs. Jorge Cota
    Sergey Rabchenko vs. Luciano Cuello
    Domonique Dolton vs. Lukasz Maciec

I'm not sure if they ever released a welterweight bracket.

Rabchenko has fought once since the 154lb bracket was published in February, knocking out an 11-6 Argentinian.

Laurente, now 38 years old, has fought twice, losing consecutive decisions to Jackson (as planned) and Takayuki Hosokawa.

Yudel Jhonson indeed fought Jorge Cota in August, losing a UD, and was KTFO in a single round by Daquan Arnett last weekend.

Dolton fought 9-5-1 Victor Fonseca in June, retiring him in 5, and then drew with 13-0 prospect Óscar Molina in September.

Also in September, Lukasz Maciec dropped a unanimous decision to Hugo Centeno Jr. in an eight-rounder.

I'm not sure if Laurente vs. Jackon and Jhonson vs. Cota were still officially considered part of the Cup or not, seeing as Rabchenko vs. Cuello and Dolton vs. Maciec didn't happen.

Needless to say, if the JSC is continuing, they're probably going to revamp the lineup at 154lb at this point.

Though he achieved his peak of fame at 140lbs, the overwhelming majority of Danny Garcia's career has been fought above the limit, technically at welterweight. It wasn't like Peterson and Malignaggi were the first of his forays. He started out 14-0 at WW before ever debuting at light welter.

His victories over Ashley Theophane & Mike Arnaoutis (until his run from 2011 until 2013 of Campbell, Holt, Morales, Khan, Morales II, Judah, and Matthysse) were at welterweight as well.

...lest anybody express confusion as to why they're letting a light welter participate in the welter tourney.

In 22 of 31 bouts (71%) he has been. :conf

(and in most of those it wasn't just a matter of him not making LWW; his opponent was above 140 too, making them welterweight contests any way you slice it)
