Were boxers "made" faster in the past than they do now?

Earnie Shavers had his first fight 2 weeks after he started boxing when he was 22 which he won on knock out.

Now most amateur boxers dont get a fight until they have trained for at least a year or so

    Really?
I wasn't allowed to do light sparring for a few months and I've seen people made to wait a lot longer.I know someone at that gym got bust up in their first spar but I know they still bring them on slowly.I really never heard that about Shavers.
I don't know if they brought them on faster but in those old films they seem to move a lot faster,in a kind of stuttery movement and they all seem to be grey.It looks a lot better nowadays.

Looking at this thread I'm reminded how guys are thrown in at the deep end in OZ 'n NZ. It's sink or swim. Guys fight for titles almost from the git-go.
