Were Calzaghe to lose a fight, would people give him respect?

Would Calzaghe have been given more respect for having a difficult fight with Lacy and perhaps losing to Kessler than he is right now?

People started to respect RJJ much more after they saw Tarver beat him.

I think that Calzaghe has to lose to a scrub before he gets his props.

Yea in a way I agree. I mean imagine if Lacy had landed a bomb on joe at some point in the fight...lets say in the 3rd round Lacy layed Joe out with a big left hook and Joe stuggled to his feet at the count of 9 and came back and beat Lacy the way he did. If that would have happened, Joe would definitely get more respect for that win.

If Roy would have been in a life and death struggle with Toney and got knocked down but still came out with a close but clear decision I think he would get more respect for that too. Or if Ruiz would have landed a bomb that had Roy in trouble but Roy still defeated him clearly he would get more respect for that win also.

if he would have lost earlier in his career then yes. Then the stigmata of 'protected fighter' would have vanished and maybe Joe would have been in more exciting fights due to that. I think Joe C is a great fighter and would give anyone problems and win most if not all of them, it is his promoter who I really blame for protecting his 0 more than anyone. If he would not have had the 0 though, Warren might not be inclined to keep him undefeated.

I wouldn't count on that! (the Joe getting KD'd in the 3rd then come back to win) See Pavlik for a prime example of how he'd be forever labled china chinned.

I don't know of anyone that considers Pavlik china chinned. Joe's been knocked down a couple of times and he's not labled china chinned now.

I think they still would. you can't take the ten year run and unifying the division away from him.

Open any thread that has Pavlik's name in it, especially one that also includes Calzaghe.

If the Lacy fight had been competitive Joe would have got the respect he got after the Kessler fight then. He beat Lacy so badly it diminished the accomplishment. Until Lacy does some more damage at 168 the doubters will just say he was overrated.

This is a ridicoulous question if Calzaghe were to retire now, would people say he sucks? No they consider him a ATG, so even if he loses, he's still a great fighter. I'm not a big fan of him, but I recongize him as the top skilled fighters in the game. As for him having that type of aura "I just can't lose like Mayweather", well that remains to be seen.

you think people respect Jones MORE after his losses to Tarver and Johnson?

If Jones had retired after Ruiz he would be neck and neck with SRR

Unfortunately Calzaghe will never be rated by most Americans. Maybe it's because he's European, who knows? If he was American, he'd be running for president.

Well thats also because he,along with other great white athletes, gets no publicity in america. If he were black,he would have commercials running 24/7 and all the little boys in the suburbs would be running around saying that they want to be like joe. Sorry, its just the truth.
