We have our share of Sailors and Firemen. But are there any outstanding fighting policemen of note during the era covering the end of the 19th century and the early decade or so of the 20th century? I've seen a Soldier or two, although not as many and not as noted. Probably even a Barber and Tailor if you look deeply enough. But what about the police, especially with all those pugnacious Irish lads on the forces in the big cites?
Possibly but they were good at stopping fights when the referee wouldn't. Also threw a couple of boxers in jail, see Choynski vs Johnson. More recently Richard Frazier of Roy Jones beatdown fame was a police officer.
Most fighter policemen that I knew of joined the force after their boxing careers. I'd be interested to know if any were pugs while being cops. Wasn't Harry Arroyo a cop?
I'd imagine that especially in the early part of the last century, with boxing being illegal in many places in the U.S., it would hardly do to have a man sworn to uphold the law engaging in such things. So they probably lied and said they were firemen.
