Were Rahman, Peter, and Stiverne superheavyweights?

Stiverne was kind of just out of shape.

Rahman might have the biggest bench of any fighter at 500+ and Peter was big enough to eat Wlad’s power and move forward. I’d say they were superheavies and Stiverne was borderline.

Yet he’d still lose to Billy Conn.

    Not in my eyes.

More the biggest men that you would not call superheavyweights.

And this makes me wonder at what point weight turns from an advantage to a handicap.

I respect size. Size being the natural build of a man. Wladimir for example is a genuine big guy, very tall and 240 pounds of lean muscle mass. I have no doubt that Wlad is stronger than for example, Ron Lyle. Or Trevor Berbick. Or Pinklon Thomas. Or any other guy that has the same level of muscle mass and overall fitness, and yet is 20 pounds lighter than Klitshko.

And yet I'm not so sure about Stiverne for example. Or Peter or Rahman. I don't think these guys are actually "bigger" than any of the men listed above. And if they were in similar shape to them, they would also come in at around 215-220 pounds.

So you have to wonder, does adding 20 pounds of excess weight change the fact that you are not naturally capable of carrying that weight without being bloated, and does that make you stronger than men your own size who are simply trimmer and fitter? Look at Haye vs Chisora. 210 vs 250 pounds. Chisora got muscled around by the 40 pound lighter Haye. They are about the same size, only Haye is much fitter.

The main difference between the heavyweights of today, and the heavyweights from the 1980s for example is that todays bunch is overall simply less fit. Not bigger, by a major degree anyway. Obviously you have anomalies like Fury but overall I don't think that todays contenders are taller of naturally larger than the 1980s bunch.

This true as a corpse cannot be dug up and made to fight living boxers.

A venerable tradition that I haven't noticed much recently, actually.

Would Ali last in a division entirely made up of Marciano's?

This is an interesting idea that's often thrown around. Unfortunately, I've never really seen any sustained argument for or against the position that a "bulked up" guy's mass is inferior to what you get naturally. It just sort of sits there, looming over the discussion in thread after thread.

Hey now Big James Toney was as natural as a man could be none of that muscle was obtained through lifting weights it was pure functional mass.

An excellent question. My first instinct would have been that attrition gets to him. On reflection, though, the absence of any non-Marciano fighters from the division would make it impossible for any of the Marcianos to be adequately prepared to face Ali for the first time. He's too unorthodox for a division where all 49 of your previous fights were against identical Italian-American short sluggers.

Also, Ali's longevity would be the stuff of legends compared to the injury-prone Marcianos, whose careers would consist entirely of foul-filled slugfests against other Marcianos.
