they used to be on closed circet tv and shown in cinema`s . cooney v holmes hagler v leanord those kind of super fights in the uk the cost was £20 entry which would have been around $40 to $50 at the time in the 80`s
ABC world of sports in america which the bbc and itv in the uk bought and showed on delay. howard cossell was the main american man in the 70`s that i remember. most world championship boxing was on free to air tv both in the uk and america and was watched by millions and millions.
in the uk this changed with the advent of sky tv in feb 1989 and they launched on the back of the tyson v bruno fight. fight was free but you had to buy the dish and box £ 400 and the following year screensport started showing a lot of boxing and sky was £10 a month.
PPV became the norm in the early 90s with fights like Holyfield-Douglas, Holyfield-Foreman, Tyson-Ruddock 1-2, etc.. The best "bang for your buck" ever was Quiroga-Anifowoshe in 1991, which was for $10. I remember reading about that in a magazine. Back then it was easier to pirate PPVs with black boxes.
i remember triple header of hearns-kinchen nunn-roldan van horn vs hines for $10 now we get chavez jr , headling fighting against the unranked guys...speaking of which, how is this guy rated 4 in the world now?
