Ah fair enough mate. i m wondering how often the hometown favorite gets these exact rules tho. I,ve seen guys get a lot more than twenty seconds from the knockdown to resume fighting etc. Do they also always pick up the count like that? I still say it looked a fast count compared to normal for me.

But could be totally wrong on that.

So everyone is gonna dismiss the 17 seconds the ref gave Ortiz in round 10 after the 1st knockdown? So much bias on this forum

The first four rounds were close enough that I give a blanket pass to any combination of scores. And if somebody wanted to give Ortiz a 10-9 instead of 10-8 in the 7th, I'm OK with that as well.

I have no objections to cards having Wilder up a point.

Of course! And Ortiz and his manager knew it from the opening bell. But that's the great thing about boxing, you have to chances to change that Your left and your right!

It wasn't a fast count if 20 seconds elapsed between the time he went down and the time the action resumed.

And yes, they are ALWAYS SUPPOSED to pick up the count.

    When they don't, controversy ERUPTS.

That was the controversy in the Tyson-Douglas fight. Tyson floored Douglas, the referee didn't pick up the count. On the film, you can see the official outside the ring was at three when the referee began his count at one.

Douglas barely got up at the referee's count, but the official outside the ring had already reached 10 a couple seconds before.

And Tyson and King went crazy. And the referee had to appear at the press conference saying he'd made a mistake and he didn't know why he didn't pick up the count.

Picking up the count is the rule.

To be fair, the ref counted slow as all hell when Ortiz went down too.

Good summary. It was an exciting fight too at times, wasn't it? Little by little, Wilder is growing on me. #2 (active) HW in the world, at least on paper. Still think Joshua and Fury would beat him.

Sky commentators mentioned how much of a beast he'd be at CW too - but those legs couldn't stand to lose another 14grams, let alone 14lbs.

I think you mean ‘on the take’, which I doubt they were but probably biased. ‘In the tank’ refers to energy, which Ortiz spent most of his the round he battered Wilder without knocking him out.

It almost looks like some type of physical deformity. If his legs were proportional to his upper body he would likely weight around 225-230

Is it really that inconceivable that Wilder won one of the first 4 rounds and 5,6 and 9?

That's 5-4 Ortiz and Wilder had a knock down so it could have been equal through 9.

The scorecards were maybe a round off and Wilder would have been legitimately ahead after 10 anyway.

Ah can't really fault the ref for following the rules then mate. Fair enough. Probably why no one mentioned it.

Remember the Tyson fight....was Tyson himself not down for a longer count as well in that fight. Maybe remembering it wrong but sure they clocked it and his was also a long count.

Not sure I love this rule...bearing in mind if the ref fumbles it...he could then need to pick up the count at something like 8. Giving the guy 2 seconds notice. Honestly would prefer any count to start from one from the referee. Might be more than ten seconds but at least the guy thats downs got fair notice of the count.

To be fair, Meyran didn't pick up the count for Tyson, either. Same cadence for both counts as well. Might have just been the way he counted.
