    In hindsight I am.

How many lineal welterweight champions have a win over a lineal light heavyweight champion?

    It is a short list!

    Barbados Joe Walcott

    Mickey Walker

    Tommy Hearns

    Unless I have missed somebody!

SRL over Donnie Lalonde was similar....but SRL made DL weigh-in at 168 lbs to contest the
SMW crown at the same time. (But that is SRL, being SRL)

1988-11-07 : Donny Lalonde 167 lbs lost to Ray Leonard 165 lbs by TKO at 2:30 in round 9 of 12
    • WBC Light Heavyweight Championship (2nd defense by Lalonde)
    • WBC Super Middleweight Championship (Vacant inaugural title)
    • Photo 1, Photo 2

It was a good fight for Hearns .. Hill matched up well .. not a big puncher and a shorter man with a shorter reach .. Hill was a guy that fought in the right division at the right time .. I honestly don't think he could have defeated Yaqui Lopez let alone so many of the guys a few years before and after him ..

Hill was overrated then and now, but it was a solid win.

    Yes, I was impressed.

Hearns was on the slide and Virgil Hill was a long standing LHW champion.

In retrospect, despite being well past it, Hearns still had good boxing skills and decent power and Hill was simply overcautious. He put absolutely no pressure on Hearns and didn't test Hearn's weak legs and shaky chin.

It was a surprise to me, but power to Tommy, who still had the skills to pay the bills.

Yes I was very impressed. I know Hill is not great but he was a solid boxer LHW champ, and Hearns moving up to yet another division taking on a naturally larger man and younger.

I have not watched it in a few years but I remember being impressed how Hearns dictated the pace and space...not sure about the score officially or mine? But I remember thinking it was a great performance where the result really was not in doubt.

With this win, Hearns took the measure of the greatest fighter in the history of North Dakota.

So, yeah..........still not sure what to think.

very impressed. hearns was like 4-1 against and hill was a good Champion. it had been 2 years since the second Leonard fight and he hadnt done anything even remotely impressive. his legs looked somewhat shot several years earlier.
hill presented fast legs, lots of Speed, an undefeated record (plus an olympic silver medal) yet a Pretty low profile………….in other words: not the guy i want my aging legend to fight.

but hearns produced a brilliant Performance. one of the best of his Career.

Hill wasn't great, but he was fairly good, and beating him was a difficult task for someone fighting 28 lbs above his first title win and 21 lbs above what he was probably best at. That alone is impressive to me.

Lalonde being weakened to 168 and being a short team champ was the same as Hearns fighting an undefeated champion who had 10 title defenses? At the time I was impressed and today I am.. I think basically Hearns beat him with the jab. No one could outjabbed Hill but Hearns and he won a decision. Hearns said it was one of his easiest fights believe it or not and Hill was the best light heavyweight at the time. It does show how great Hearns was and could have been had he stuck to boxing in his career. He said everything worked off his jab and he could do everything better than Hill. Hill somehow thought Hearns would be reckless and he could counter him with the left.

I don't know. Even if you eliminate the Hearns fight from his resume. he had a good resume. The Jones fight he was doing well but hit with that flukish body punch, yet he was older then. But he had twenty something title fights in two division. I don't think that is someone overrated. He just met two guys who were too good and that hurt his legacy. Jones and Hearns were not great for his legacy, but if you eliminate them he had a hall of fame career. no doubt. Wasn't he elected into the hall on the first time?
