LIGHT-middleweight Daniel Dawson knows that the importance of his next fight extends beyond his own career with WA boxing suffering a one-two combination in recent weeks. Dawson, with a record of 36 wins (24 by knockout) and three losses, will take on South African Virgil Kalakoda (25 wins, 16KO, six losses and two draws) for the interim Pan Asian Boxing Association light-middleweight title on July 23 at the WA Italian Club.

It will be a fight that follows a disappointing fortnight for boxing in WA.
WBO Lightweight champion Erin McGowan had her opponent pull out a day out from her title defence two weeks ago and just last week heavyweight Mark de Mori's opponent failed a blood test prior to their bout and was forced to withdraw.

``In boxing it happens, it happens in the US, it happens in Europe, it happens in title fights,'' Dawson said. ``I've been on the end of the stick as well.

``I just think we've been unfortunate in WA that it's happened a few times in a row and what I think we need here in WA is a couple of great fights in a row.

``We need to show the rest of the world that we are at that level and we can do what we're saying, that we can take on the best in the world or the best in Australia.''

Dawson labelled his bout with Kalakoda as ``do or die'' after mapping out a five year plan for the remainder of his career.

The former WBO contender wants a world title within two years before gradually exiting the fight game and moving into mentor roles, passing on what he's learnt.

Dawson said a shot at the WBA Light Middleweight title was on the cards later in the year after being approached by the camp of current champion Austin Trout and a win against Kalakoda would lift Dawson's ranking back into the top 10, allowing a title challenge to be sanctioned.

``This fight means more to me than any fight in my career so far and that's because I've really reached a turning point in my life,'' he said.

``He's an absolute animal, a tough guy, and he had a boxing world title with the IBC a few years back.

``That's exactly what I want - I want to be in the ring with a guy who wants to beat me, who wants to knock me out and put me through my paces.

``I want, not to just win this fight in incredible fashion, but to make a statement that there is a boxer out there better than Mundine, better than Danny Green and I aim to show that.''

WBA #10 middleweight Robbie Bryant (14-1-1, 7 KOs) will clash with former Australian super middleweight champion Les Piper (13-8-3, 3 KOs) over twelve rounds at the Italian Club in Perth, Western Australia on July 23 with the IBF Australasian title up for grabs. Promoter Ty Colman said, “Robbie Bryant has shown world class skills in recent fights but Les Piper comes to the ring with excellent credentials.” Colman continued, “There are several world class middleweights in Australia including Sam Soliman and Garth Wood with Daniel Geale recently capturing the IBF world title in Germany. Robbie boxed Daniel as an amateur and had him on the canvas before losing a close decision.” Colman concluded, “Team Bryant is interested in boxing the best middleweights in Australia including world IBF champion Daniel Geale but would also consider a world title opportunity against WBA champion Felix Sturm.”

Also in action will be former WBO light middleweight challenger Daniel Dawson (36-3, 24 KOs) who will slug it out with Virgil Kalakoda (25-6-2, 16 KOs) over twelve rounds for the interim PABA title. Dawson lost a WBO challenge to Serhiy Dzinziruk in ten rounds in 2010 and dropped a twelve round decision to IBF world champion Daniel Geale in 2007. Dawson stopped former world amateur champion Anton Solopov by KO in round one in 2007.

On the undercard bout, classy light heavyweight David Letizia (8-2-1, 3 KOs) will be in action against Taito Raturere (8-0, 3 KOs) of New Zealand for the Interim PABA title.

    Promoter: CDL Boxing Promotions.

IMO, Taito will give Letizia belting of his life and Bryant will know he was in a fight for a couple of days.

What makes you say that Anton. I have never seen Taito fight but the quality of his opponents (boxrec) doesnt look flash. Probably on par with Letizia's opponents.

No more grand claims about tonights weigh in Anton? You make it down to junior middleweight like you promised after last time?
