I've never heard of anyone refer to mid range exchanges such as what we saw in AJ Ruiz I as inside fighting. Inside to me is when they are close enough to clinch whether they choose to clinch or not

For me it's clinch fighting, but doesn't have to necessarily be during a clinch. Guys can be leaning on each without ever actually clinching and landing blows and to me that's infighting. The second there's separation between the fighters it ceases to be infighting ad far as I'm concerned
If you want a recent example look at Shawn Porter and Derevyanchenko fights. Shawn Porter did an excellent job against Errol Spence and Keith Thurman and Derevyanchenko vs GGG. It’s a risky style and it is also punishing to both fighters lots of headbutts and liver shots. Kell Brook did a good job of clinching and pushing Porter back every time he tried to come inside.
This is the definition for me too. If you're inside your opponents reach then you are inside. Against a taller opponent with a bigger reach it might mean mid range too as getting too close will just see you get clinched and smothered against taller fighters who clinch. But against a fighter with a similar or smaller reach it means you have to get closer and be right up close with your head on their chest or throat.
Inside fighting is like Tyson v Tillis, tons of hooks and uppercuts because both punches are inside punches, Duran fought that way, the ultimate inside fighting throwing tons of beautiful hooks and uppercuts on the inside.
