Since Top Rank wants this fight to buld up more what about another double-header? Heres my idea for the card: Undercard: John Duddy/Jullio Ceaser Chavez Jr. Co-Main Events: Gamboa/Chris John, JuanMa/Cristobal Cruz or Elio Rojas
I would like to see them on seperate cards as both are too big to be in a co-feature bout. The fights are pretty nice though.
Juanma is already a big draw in PR.Gamboa has not established himself yet as a draw in Miami.A few more appearances and fights on HBO ought to establish him though.Arum is right-they both need more time to make this a superfight.:good
Arum should put Gamboa on the Pac-Clottey undercard, that would give Gamboa the exposure that a talent like him deserves.
I'd love that, but it's never gonna happen. I'd almost be willing to bet money that in the next doubleheader, Lopez will face the Concepcion-Santiago winner (another top rank fighter, and either of those guys should lose to Lopez) and Gamboa will face the Ponce de Leon-Orlando Cruz winner (who will be Gamboa's mandatory). After that, Lopez will face the Vasquez/Marquez IV winner (who will be Lopez's mandatory), and Gamboa will try to unify with Cristobal Cruz (who's also with Top Rank). THEN Lopez and Gamboa will face each other. I doubt Gamboa and John ever fight each other. While I think both would actually fight the other one, for both of their promoters, the risk/reward ratio just isn't good enough to make that fight.
I think we'll definitely see them feature on the same card more than once in the future. I think Rafa will beat Izzy, making him a potential opponent for one, while Cruz gets the other. Hopefully, just before they face off, we see them on the same card with Gamboa facing John and JuanMa facing Caballero. I can dream, can't I?
I don't too much care for this pairing to be honest(unless they are fighting eachother of course). I don't think Gamboa particularly cares for it either. Its kind've a slight to him, and you can tell he gets a little peeved whenever he's asked about Juanma. I mean Gamboa is the better fighter, the better entertainment, and he's got the most potential. There is absolutely NO reason in the world he should be stuck riding behind Juanma in co-main events, testing how he would do against the last guy who gave Juanma trouble, or for that matter be ranked #3 behind Juanma in the featherweight division. atsch what is the deal with Juanma getting ALL the love while Gamboa has ALL the talent?
Wouldnt suprise me if Arum pitted Gamboa against Caballero and Juan Ma against John. Then its into the mega fight. Obviously they are keeping Juan Ma away from Caballero, but it would be thought that Gamboa would have an easy night with him. Whilst while Gamboa and John would be a logical fight, Juan Ma would be favoured to take care of business there, leading to a mega fight with Gamboa. All Arum would have to bank on is Juan Ma getting over John.
According to Scumbag Arum he wants Gamboa-John and JuanMa-Caberello which would be amazing but I wont hold my breath.
More likely than fighting Caballero or John, IMO. Actually, I think Lopez vs. the Marquez/Vazquez winner almost HAS to happen. Marquez/Vazquez is a WBO title eliminator, so the winner will be Lopez's mandatory. Also, the biggest money fight for the winner would be against Lopez, and the biggest money fight for Lopez would be the winner. Unless the winner retires, it almost makes too much sense not to happen. Gamboa-Cruz is just my guess. First, Cruz is also a Top Rank fighter, so that means the fight is easy to make, and Arum likes to keep things in the family. Second, if Gamboa wins, then he'd be able to drop his WBA belt (since at some point they'll enforce the Chris John mandatory - Super champ has 18 months to fight the regular champ) and still have Lopez-Gamboa be a unification. Finally, Gamboa unifying would probably land him on some pound for pound lists. If all that happens, then Gamboa-Lopez will be a huge fight, way bigger than it would be now. And what's the point of delaying if they're not going to build the guys up? Beating John or Caballero may bump them up P4P lists, but won't do anything to help their popularity. John and Caballero both have a habit of making ugly fights at the bare minimum, and neither one has a fan base.
Wasn't it leaked that Gamboa and Lopez would be fighting on separate billings late in the spring season? I remember Steve Kim talking about Lopez fighting in May, Gamboa in mid April.
