Its hard to tell at this point I would say. HBO obviously is very intrested in the potential JuanMa-Gamboa bout and clearly wanna put there fights on there network but I see 2 seperate nights in May as difficult. Right now the plan obviously is Mayweather-Mosley May 1st, Juan Manuel Marquez on HBO WCB for May 8th so I see it difficult to believe that HBO would put 4 dates in May. But I suppose they could always move the discussed Pavlik-Martinez fight to WCB in May and have a Gamboa or Lopez fight in the co-feature since Pavlik is Top Rank to and maybe a BAD headlined by the other later in the month. I say kill all those ideas and make a double feature with Gamboa-JuanMa agian its the best way to build this fight.
The way that Kim said it was the plan was for these two to have one more tune up fight (one would headline one of Arum's PPVs) and then have the two meet in October. I would love to see them share co-billing but going by what the "experts" said, it looks like they'll milk separate events for the guys.
This is the most likely scenerio. You can see a mile away that Arum wants Lopez-Rafa/Izzy fight to take place. I win over eaither one will do great for lopez. As for Gamboa, I really want to see him fight Elio Rojas for his title. If he beats him then he would hold two titles and him and lopez can try and unify down the road.
If he has Gamboa unify first, it will almost certainly be Cruz, who's a Top Rank fighter and whose wild style is tailor made for Gamboa to counter him to death. It would be exciting as long as it lasts though. Rojas probably won't fight for another year, since he's with Don King. Damn shame, but I can already see him losing a chunk of his prime to inactivity.
I think Arum should put them on a card in Miami. There's a lot of Puerto Ricans and Cubans there, so it would help sell the fight. I think Cubans are the largest minority group in Miami, so it would also help Gamboa's fanbase grow.
It sux because i can see them being spoon fed soft opponents for a year or more to build it up. I just want to see it now. Who cares about it being a mega fight? IT will be a hell of a fight no matter what and if either of them loses then it will just ruin it. Lets do it now while they are both undefeated prospects.
I'm no Juanma fan but he did beat the better opponent last Saturday so he deserves to be ranked higher at featherweight.
And since when has JuanMa been getting "love"? JuanMa has been dogged since the Mtgawalaala fight and Gamboa has been beloved since then. The roles have reversed from 2008.
