There is not something they revere, mainly their memories of great nights.

The likes of Buchanan, Lynch, McGowan, McTaggart, Paterson are all revered.

And lesser guys like 'Cowboy' McCormack, Chic Calderwood, Peter Keenan.

Scotland's never had a great boxing scene as such.

Nope not really. When I started liking boxing it was about Hagler and Leonard and Wille Pep.

When I was 11 I think I remember my Father and brother bought a pay per view fight. I had no clue who the hell was fighting but I found it interesting that one of the fighters had written somethin in big letters called "Golden Palace" or something like that. I was thinking at the time what the hell is that, who the hell is he, and why the hell does he have that on his back. It would years later that I found out it was a huge bet he had placed on himself to win the fight that I was watching. That boxer was sharp as tack.

My second memory of boxing I recall was Mike Tyson or Lennox Lewis getting in the ring with some guy who eventually broke down and started crying to himself and eventually quit. I was perplexed as was the rest of the audience that night.

Lastly I remember this guy losing apart of his ear. I wondered at the time what ear taste like. Maybe that's why I always used to bite my dad's ear as kid?

that's about as old as my boxing memory is.

Weirdly, I got into boxing hardcore via Jack Johnson. I saw some very old footage on a Mike Tyson doc and kind of got hooked. But it was Tyson and Bruno that got me turned onto it really.

Watching the Golden Gloves bouts where the boxers didn't wear headgear.
Going to the fights in NY, most every night, sans Sunday.
Watching the fighters in the ring wearing regular Everlast trunks, and NOT mini-skirts.
Friday nights going to the Garden Cafeteria ,before the bouts at MSG.
Listening to real professional boxing announcers as Harry Balogh, and Johnny Addie.
Going to my favorite place,Stillmans Gym weekly where I saw a slew of the greatest
fighters of the Golden 1940s, a few feet from me preparing for their bouts.
Watching Charley Goldman, Whitey Bimstein, Freddie Brown, Ray Arcel, Chickie Ferrara
, and last but not least Lou Stillman, sitting on his throne like a dictator instilling fear
    on his subjects...
That was part of the "old school i remember"....

my best ol school memory is probably getting into an argument with my dad overwho was better, ali or robinson

he sat me down and made me watch robinson/turpin 2, robinson/graziano and robinson/maxim

then we continued arguing but it was a great time. he grew up in the 60s but his heart rested in the 40s and 50s with robinson and charles

My dad's side of the family were old timey, ol' school boxing fans...typical of the 30's thru thr 50's...they all got together, my dad, uncle, aunt and even my grandmother...all drinking beer, smoking cigarettes, watching the Friday Night Fights and rooting for their favorites...my grandmother loved Joey Giardello especially...called him a "handsome devil"..and always cheered him on. My grandmother got up to go to the kitchen to get a beer while the Marciano-Walcott rematch had started and just missed the ko...she said Walcott looked like a guy who had just woke up but didn't want to get out of bed...lol.
All the heavyweight champs of the past they were familiar with, going back to Dempsey, in my grandmother's case...he was another favorite of hers..

Jg, what memories of Sunnyside Gardens !.Not long after it closed ,
SG became a Carpet Store where a friend of mine worked as a salesman.
when i would visit the Carpet Store, I was flooded with painful nostalgiac
thoughts of those glorious times for me .Oh, where did time fly ?...b.b.
