True enough buddy, fair comment, would have been a very tough fight for both methinks. stay safe hombre.
Just random, but I’ve never seen a version of Louis vs Schmeling 2 in which the film isn’t purposely slowed down when Joe is pounding Max on the ropes. The fight of course begins at normal speed, then they cut to two old fellas in the audience, then it returns to slowed down footage with Max taking hellacious punches whilst on the ropes - mind you, Louis still looks incredibly fast at slower speed. I’d like to see it in normal speed also - I guess I could tweak speed settings. For mine, it’s one of the most thorough 1st round KOs you could ever see - a deadly high concentration of Louis at his very best poured on to poor Max.
@reznick had a clip on here years ago...it seemed a bit sped up........but past prime Louis' hand speed was god like in this clip.
Absolutely laughable a lot of people here think Holmes had an advantage in hand speed. And Holmes is my 6th favourite fighter!
One or the guys in Grey’s boxing gym. Name escapes me, but I have no doubt under the tutelage of “The Great Grey” he’ll be champion soon enough.
Two of my favorites Louis has more power in both hands..great combinations. Holmes is faster of hand and foot. A better jab and a stronger chin. 50/50 fight for me
Are we not writing in the sam language? Yes, I've seen Martin vs Liston. Yes, I ve watched many Joe Louis fights. Yes I've seen many of Holmes's bouts, basically every one from Norton onwards.
In my opinion, Joe Louis would beat Larry Holmes eight times out of ten. I believe Joe fought a bad fight the first time against Billy Conn. It happens. Also, Joe did win that fight, so he did what winners often do, he found a way to win, even on an off night. And I am allowing that Larry could pick up a couple wins off of Joe in ten tries, but, in my book, Joe was the better fighter.
Louis's ace would be Larry's tendency to drop his hands and get hit. Between his solid chin and top-tier recovery, it usually didn't matter, but with Louis, it may not be one big punch that hits, it may be 3-4 in rapid succession. And I seem to remember the only time Larry was stopped was by a big puncher who threw combos in rapid succession.
Louis' hands look faster to me. His jab & lightning quick combos see him through to a UD/late TKO over Holmes. But Louis would have his hands full and I wouldn't be surprised if Holmes won.
