To become an all time great, Vlad will have to win all of the rest of his fights. All of the all time greats are Americans. Well in ten more years The USA will barely exist. The Europeans will have more power in everything including sportswriters. Lennox, Vlad, Vitali will all be all time greats. Maybe even Valuev.

Well, we would need to see things with further context (eg. actually see his performances against those guys, see how those guys themselves pan out) to make a certain judgment, but certainly that would put him in the running for a spot amongst the 10 greatest ever. He would be unified, undisputed linear champion with a final record of something like 65-3, an undefeated run at the top of the division spanning seven plus years, and a thorough cleaning out of potential rivals within his era. That's definitely at least top 15 material.

Of course, I doubt all of those things will come to pass, but I do think it likely that Wlad will at least close out his career in the top 25 or top 20.

Especially Holmes who was 1 of the most skilled HWs in history and arguably beat Spinks twice in his previous 2 fights. Arguably Holmes was unbeaten.

Larry was 38, was clearly past his prime, but the skills he still had would beat many champions in history.In fact this version of Holmes is a better opponent than anyone Dempsey, Jeffries, Jack Johnson, Liston or Holmes himself beat for my money. Wlad has never stepped in the ring with anyone of a 1988 Holmes ability.

Tyson destroyed this version of Holmes in 4 rounds. A more overweight, older, 42yo Holmes went onto beat Mercer and take 4rounds from Holyfield.

This performance by Tyson was a superb ATG performance.

 

If Vlad beats Thompson,Povetiken, then the Chagaev/Valuev winner and finishes off with the winner of Peter and who ever he unifies against....mabey the winner of Peter/Valuev/Chagaev...someone else has to try and unify while Vlad defends all these A.B.C.'s...then say give him another 3-5 defences, which is hard to do but if he wins just those 3 fights...they are big fights vs the best, then he has done more than a lot of high rated Champs so a lot of people would consider him up there close to the top 10 ,5 more winning fights would make him 55-3, 10 more would make him 60-3 but Vlad has to see how he feels if he can get past the next 3 fights and at 55-3 beating the best, who knows...Is there someone out there now that will emerge to challenge him, he has a tough fight coming vs Thompson, 81inch reach southpaw who is 35 but never had a tough fight and a good body banger, then Alexander P. who is green but has a solid foundation...then whoever emerges from the Chagaev/Valuev/Peter scuffle

 

Not seen him fight then, I once was watching him throw a jab and I went made a cup of tea came back and he still hadnt finnished throwing the same jab

 

Holmes was supposed to fight at least one tune up,it didnt happen ,if he hadn't been so greedy for the dough he might have stuck out for a couple of warm ups and done better,I dont think he would have won ,but he probably would have gone a few more rounds.Larry was allways vulnerable to a fast right hand over his low left,Tyson had very quick hands and with not much coming back he could wait for his opening to land his wallop,a younger Holmes would have been faster and more mobile ,and pumping that wonderful jab out Tyson would have had to worry more about defence imo.

 

I rate the fighters of yesterday higher than Wladimir because most of them didn't get stopped by B Level fighters whilst also being in a more competitive era.

This has nothing to do with being bias. Wladimir doesn't have a case for top 10 at the minute, and it'll take more than wins over Haye and Povetkin to do it.

 

To add to my coment, Vlad is moving along but if He can beat Thompson,Povetiken,Chagaev/Peter winner then fight 3-5 title defences he may be thought about but if he fails in between, his stock will drop...top 10 is a tough order because there are a lot of great fighters bordering the top 10

 

Even if Wlad is allowed to go unify another belt, he'll be 32-33 by the time he does it. The way I see it Wlad has the IBF and WBO, and owns a win over the WBC champion in Sam Peter. In essence, this is three belts.
A win over the WBA champ Chagaev vs Valuev would make it four.

This is enough to crown a new lineal champion by anyone's standards.

 

While Tyson disposed of 38 year old holmes in 4 rounds, vitali klitschko lost to a 38 year old lennox lewis by TKO......that is the difference.......tyson did what he was supposed to do with an old legend, vitali did not.

Vitali had a bad cut but was ahead and Lewis at 39 was still an offensive giant, Lewis had power that Holmes never had and Lewis did not have a lot of fights and he was not burned out

 

VLad beat PETER ALREADY SO ITS THESE DEFENCES AND CHAGAEV/Valuwev/Peter winner
