What actual proof is there that Liston put Lenoleum on his gloves vs Clay?

    AB-solutely.
You see the size of Liston's shoulders?
He wanted to protect his powerful moneymaker.
Why do you think he often came into the ring with a towel draped around his shoulders?

    I'll tell you: a tri-fold practical adaptation.
Sure intimidation-but he also needed to dry the material after each new installation, & disguise the flesh-colored device & sticky glue until it settled.

Come to think of it, likely the binding (& temporarily blinding) polymer broke down due to Liston's strenuous efforts when he stretched to starch the elusive Clay-& Clay does not mix well with linoleum.
This must be another reason he changes his name to Ali-in fact the day after the fight.

He clearly must have researched what blinded him after the fight, & resolved that no new-fangled faux-deltoid extension would ever even accidentally threaten him again as champion.

Ali's new moniker also leveled a subtle insider dig/twit at Liston; meaning that unlike the 337,642 year old Liston (which is another story), Muhammad was declaring he was all authentic flesh & blood, "All I".

These really are the most credible explanations.
    You are welcome Earthlings.

Angelo Dundee also said Jersey Joe Walcott's cornermen pulled the same stunt against Rocky Marciano.

Shag really hadn’t come into play in a big way yet. If it had, completely different fight.

Jock Malone was blinded by liniment from Bryan Downey's body in their fight for the NBA's version of the middleweight title on September 19, 1922, an example of there almost never being anything new under the sun.

"Malone charged that Downey's manager, Dunn, had the liniment placed upon Downey's gloves and chest in order to blind him."

I wonder what kind of floor wax Sonny Liston used on his shoulder? Ha Ha.

Wow. 100 years ago and 42 years prior to the accusations levelled at Liston. Excellent info. Thanks Kid.
