    I see both sides.

If boxing doesn’t need to be regulated … what does? People literally die and suffer life-altering injuries in the ring and we know of cases where having required medical precautions might have helped prevent that, or the severity of it at least.

I mean, no boxing (or MMA, kickboxing, etc.) card should ever take place without a ringside doctor and an ambulance on hand. Those things are pretty expensive in themselves. Same for insurance to cover major in-ring injuries. Again, expensive.

You license a guy in part to cover the administrative costs of regulative oversight but also to authenticate who that person is … I know of cases where guys have turned up on suspension for medical reasons in other states, which got discovered during the licensing process, or prevented from fighting because they just got knocked out elsewhere. And I don’t want Panama Lewis showing up in a corner because nobody knew who he was becaues he didn’t have to produce an ID to get licensed, etc.

    It’s complicated.

The whole climate change thing wasn’t an issue back in the day, but on the other hand if you go back far enough they didn’t have air conditioning. Probably a lot of them who lived in colder places didn’t have really good heating systems where they were either.
