His early win against Du Plooy as a novice. He blew out Cooper when Cooper was seen as the favourite. He whitewashed Purritty in a good boxing display that showed that he had both mobility and stamina. He whomped Al Cole with no effort at all.Sanders beat some useful 'names' that were pretty much done for like De Leon for example or guys that were seen as useful because they had just given a name fighter a tough fight, like Billups had given Lewis a tough fight. The win over Czyz was not bad; I thought Czyz was in fair shape for that though he had been off for a while. Being 'off for a while' more or less sums up Sanders' career. I feel like he was severely under-fought and that he should have been kept busy instead of chasing unicorns like Lewis and Tyson.
thanks. Great post. Do you think he was avoided by a lot of guys because he was a southpaw? Or do you think it was the result of him staying in SA and playing golf? I wonder if Don King could have promoted him into something special.
I feel that Sanders was certainly "avoided" in the sense that he was a southpaw banger with big power and speed. Even Lewis is on record as having said that he had been apprehensive about fighting him. But worse than that, Corrie did not have a high profile. He did not bring in the big bucks. Therefore that made him even easier to be avoided. Who wants a hard fight for peanuts? It was up to him to impose himself on the division and he didn't really, if we are honest. And yeah, you are right: he needed a better promoter, a guy that would keep him busy.
