I felt Whitaker struggled and Jacobs slipped a lot of shots very well, does this prove Whitaker would have had problems with some of the better southpaws in an around his weight classes down the years like Manny Pac?
Did you perhaps read about this Aug of 95 fight in a particular 1996 The Ring magazine? Shall we hear about Bivins reliving the 40s. For sure a good topic you misssed is the Barrera-McKinney fight. That fight MADE Barerra.
Whitaker was going through the motions in his lesser fights by this point. Any issues he had with Jacobs, Rodriguez etc were more to do with how he approached the fight, rather than any merits of his opponents. His defence was still as good as it needed to be, but offensively he didn't have the weapons to blow guys away like Trinidad or Quartey probably would have. I don't think anything should be read into Whitaker-Jacobs other than as evidence of Whitaker sliding from his peak level.
lol! Not guilty this time, I just happened to watch Jacobs giving a little advise in a vid about slipping and countering and thought I`d have a look at his bout with Pernell, it was after I heard Jim Watt stating during the first Benn v Eubank fight that Sr was making a mistake moving to avoid punches from his hips and should have blocked more, so I wanted a vid to show how to slip properly.
I also remember before this fight ,when Jacobs lost to James Buddy Mcgirt ,about 89 I believe. I'm sure the experts gave Jacobs a good shot at winning ,Gary was up and coming and looked pretty decent at the time .No Shame in losing a decision to Mcgirt in my eyes.
