The Jirov clip not only showcases Toney's chin and defence, but his natural strength and power, considering he is already well above his natural weight. His best performances have already been listed, but I would add the first Sam Peter fight to that. I know it's not the most exciting, nor is Toney exactly stellar, but it's worth it just to marvel at how a middleweight has went up to heavyweight and can actually hold his own against far bigger and stronger men. I don't believe anyone in the modern era ever did this so successfully- RJJ didn't regularly mix it with heavys. Toney was freakishly talented, and even though he never quite had the career to match this talent (his 91-94 period was immense though, a match for most middleweights in history IMO), the guy is a legend and true ATG to me.
Its amazing how JT gets so much credit for beating a washed up Barkley especially after Nigen Benn destroyed him a few years before. Holyfield was also a shell of him self when he lost. I rate JT highly for his win over Nunn and first fight with McCallum.
GREAT LIST...HE SHOWS ALOT IN HIS RECENT FIGHT WITH RAHMAN..(THOUGH NOT LIKE HIS OLD SELF) BUT HE SHOWS HIS BOXING SKILL AND ABILITY TO COUNTER PUNCH
Not to forget his fight against Prince Charles Williams. Great KO! At CW, Toney also schooled Jason Robinson and Adolpho Washington. Not his best wins, but nice fights to see nevertheless
i dont know why peopel say michael nunn he was gettign outboxed and out worked for most of the fight,he did have some good times in a few rounds but he was just out of reech of nunn for the whole fight. if it wasnt becuase he threw a right hand then overhand left,a bizaar switch hitting combination agaisnt a technician southpaw. im sure nunn would of made it to the end and had a ud over him. middlewieght was not toney's best wieght i feel. longest belt reign of his career yeah, but he clearly looked out of place at middlewieght. he had been out boxed and out hustled by not so perfected fighters. super-middlewieght i think is where his greatest performances are. barkley was an underdog but was tipped by a few of the press becuase his hieght and fitgh wieght (180 by some accounts) which coudl of just squashed and engulfed toney. then we saw the best display of counterpuinching combinations. Tim Littles was also brushed over. littles was no mug as people think. littles was a long amatuer career fighter along with a unbeaten record and the in the prime of his career. wins over A.byrd (chris's brother),ESB's very own scully, and future wba champ liles. after a decent first few roudn of light and heavy sparring. a cut appeared on toney's brow. about a inch and a half long between the eyes and forehead. rockeyesque moments. had to finish an elusive boxer who had no shame in running and clinching the 4th round. he done the business in amazing fashion. holyfield. a fight in which holyfield had a great first round if i remember. then after a bit of sparring some huge combo's were landed on holy's head and body. if it wasnt stopped i wouldnt of been surprised if it had been a complete shut out. or holy collapsed or somthing terrible like that. also both i consider the best cruiserwieghts of there generation.
Barkley Jirov Littles Holyfield and even though the steroids may taint it, he ran over John Ruiz in more dominant fashion that RJJ did. Nunn and Mccalum should not be mentioned. Nunn was quite a few points ahead before Toney caught him late, and Mccallum was a very close win against a great fighter who was past his best.
The fact that the McCallum fight was so close is more to a testament to how great McCallum was than anything, as Toney looked much more versatile and efficient in that fight than any other. The Nunn fight was not a very good showing outside of the KO, I agree.
he was nearly flawless in his performance against Holyfield but his best performances are his classic post fight interviews.
I think he's the only fighter in history apart from Fitzsimmons who fought Heavyweights so regurlaly and toe to toe, If you saw Roy ran around all night against Ruiz, Toney didn't run or even more suprisingly get knocked out by a fully blown heavy hitting heavyweight in Samuel Peters
You made some interesting points but I saw the Nunn fight differently. Toney was in that fight from the beginning and was really starting to come on in the 7th round. In my view, he was behind by about 2-4 points at the time of the stoppage. The scorecards did tell a different story but remember this was Nunn's hometown and he was the champion and a big draw at that time. Toney worked the body, slowed Nunn down and kinda of set him up for the knockout. MCCallum was still a terrific fighter when Toney fought him. He was the current WBA middleweight titlist and went on to even to win a third title at lightheavy. The fight was close but Toney clearly landed the heavier punches in that fight. I remember that HBO pulled a poll one week after the fight and the overhelming majority of experts (over 80%) thought that Toney won.
