The happy endings are the ones we don't hear or read about George and there are many of them. Happy endings rarely sell newspapers.

Johnny Owen. He got KO'd brutally by Lupe Pintor and went into a coma and died. It turns out his skull was found to be thinner than usual and he was at risk of this kind of injury. He shows a lot of heart in that Pintor fight. Many years later Pintor met with Johnnys father who was also in his corner that night and they unveiled a statue of Johnny in his hometown. There was a documentary made which was very good. There is also a book called "The Big If" which may be the best boxing book I have read. It's a very sad story.

One not usually remembered is the plane crash
of the US Boxing team in 1979..... A lot of
outstanding and probably future pro champs
loss....

 

I take it, you refer to the 1980 Warsaw plane crash.

This made me think... who was the future top pro (world champ?), who should have been on the plane, but somehow missed it at the last minute? A voice in my head says Donald Curry - but I can't find anything on the net to confirm this. Anyone remembers who it was?

yes their was one who missed the plane, went on to
become world champ. Who it was I can't remember.
