Wether you love him, hate him, or simply don't give a pickle about him, you got to admit Ray Robinson is one of the very best ever, his career, resume, skills on tape and accomplishments show that But we also know that no one in boxing is unbeatable, everyone had and has flaws in their game that some and some could and could not exploit in order to beat each other, that is the same case with Walker So, what would he have to improve, wether drastically or just a little bit, to be considered absolutely unbeatable?
His jab is a weak point he was a great puncher and offensively he was incredible but he could get nasty and “expose” himself he was better as an attacker then “boxing” very few chinks in the armour with that said psychically he was perfect for 147lbs but above there he lacked physical strength. EDIT: He also had no idea how to fight circling right.
His head movement is the only thing. He relied more on distance management and foot movement / positioning for defense. As we know, he was incredibly good at this. As a result his actual slipping skills etc are below some other ATGs imo. In everything else he is at least 'second best'. Even if someone else was better at one thing than him, he was likely better at the thing that negated it. Combine that with his physical attributes and you have the insane H2H fighter we know and love.
Notice he never circles right? Left is much more combative if you understand distance, I think it suited him but it was missing.
Physical strength as far as grappling, clinching on the inside. Boxing was even rougher then. Being physical, smothering him worked for certain guys. LaMotta ofcourse and later Turpin and Fullmer.
Defense mostly, he got caught a lot and shouldn't have to be honest. Also you have to factor in his height advantage over most opponents.
Defense could be leaky at times although he got carried by good positioning and footwork, then SRR,unlike what most people say can be smothered good and get dragged into being a bully victim.
Strength. Robinson could be handled a bit inside, he wasn't a strong fighter, though I wish we had more WW so we could see how he handled those smaller men. At MW he often had to make plans that avoided certain aspects of confrontation though. Seeing him think away round those problems is cool. Physical strength is where he might be improved, maybe.
Again " Fighting to me seems barbaric, I don't really like it, I enjoy out-thinking another man and outmaneuvering him, but I still don't like to fight " strange on some level ?
