He said he would win the British title within 5 fights and be undisputed champ within a year. And he did get that contract. After people saw him fight though, he soon became a joke.
Perhaps the biggest myth of all is that todays champions are not as good as those of yesteryear. Of course there are exceptions,eg Ali,Robinson, Louis,Leonard etc who would have been great in any era, but generally speaking today's fighters are would defeat those of the (even fairly recent) past. In EVERY single measurable sporting endeavour, performances have improved due to sportmen being stronger, fitter, having better staminia, better nutrition, and developments in sports science. Boxing, as perhaps the most athletic of all sports, is no different
That a fighter gets stronger as the fight progresses. This is commentator babble and is impossible. British commentators are truly awful(Steve Holdsworth excepted) whilst I really enjoy listening to the Yank tv men, especially Teddy Atlas,Colonel Bob Sheriden
That and undefeated record means a boxer is good. Getting KO'd automatically means you suck. 4lbs is a HUGE differance in size and weight, so much so that it's amazing people make the jump. Those are just a few.
That the challenger for a title actually has to 'go and take the belt away from the champion' The inference is that the challenger must do EXTRA well in order to win. This is nonsense. The only concession made to a champion is that in the event of a draw he retains the title
Myth #1: Champions get close rounds. ---No dumbass, champions dont get the benefit of the doubt in rounds just for being champion. Myth #2:Camacho was a runner after Rosario. ---No, he was a runner after moving up to 147. Myth #3:Jermain Taylor gets bad decisions. ---Whatever you say Hopkins hugger. Taylor has yet to get one bad decision. Myth #4:Tyson fell to anyone who stood up to him. ---Oh yeah, I wasnt aware that Mitch Green, Berbick, Thomas, Tucker, Biggs, Holmes, Tubbs, Bruno, Ruddock just dropped when looking at Tyson. Myth #5:Mayweather hasn't fought anybody past 135. ---Yeah, what a ducker. DLH and Hatton, how dare he fight these bums when greats like Margarito, Gavin Rees, Witter, Ricardo Torres, Malignaggi wait in the wings. Myth #6:Trinidad lost to every guy he fought with boxing skills. ---I wasn't aware that Whitaker, BLocker, Camacho, Vargas, Reid, Joppy, Carr were all plodding kayo punchers. Myth #7e La Hoya lost all of his big fights. ---Ruelas, Chavez, Quartey, Whitaker, Vargas were all very big fights. Myth #8:Roy Jones had to lose 25 lbs of muscle to fight Tarver. ---First off, how the hell do you gain 25 lbs of muscle and then lose it within 7 months? Second off, he weighed in at 193 with his clothes on for that fight. All RJJ did was not weight drain for the fight. Myth #9:Leonard just flurried at the end of each round against Hagler to win. ---No, he outsped him, used footwork, fought Hagler off the ropes to beat him. Myth #10: Ali just layed on the ropes the whole fight against Foreman to tire him out. ---No, he jabbed, and parried the hell out of Foreman's punches while retreating to tire him out.
Myth: Uppercuts are dangerous and wide open to counters. Truth: Only if you throw them wide from long range.
Lose a fight in any way shape or form, even to a world class fighter, and you are a fraud. Don't lose in any way shape or form, even if you beat world class fighters, you are an over- protected bum.
Myth: Both hands need to be up at all times. Truth: Only if you desperately want to limit yourself. The left hand is not always needed for defensive purposes.
Myth - Southpaws are from outerspace Truth - No they just fight with a right hand lead ! P.S. _ David UK : Frank Sidebottom , Outstanding I feel like Im watching Number 73 again !
So true!!!! :good Especially when they lose to a "Top" fighter and all of a sudden they're "shot" atsch or overrated atsch Watch if Hatton loses to Floyd....the best P4P fighter on the planet who is expected to beat everyone.....everyone will say how overrated and average Hatton is . Makes me mad actually
Physically, sure he was. His boxing wasn't prime though, he had no head movement anymore which was like 90% of his defense.
George Foreman was dominating Muhammad Ali until he got tired. Marvin Hagler was a brawler. Fernando Vargas lost to Felix Trinidad simply because he chose to brawl instead of box. Oscar De La Hoya's corner told him to run against Trinidad. James Toney-Michael Nunn was a "lucky punch". Toney was getting to Nunn had won the previous couple of rounds. Actually, basically any time "lucky punch" is used. People saying that De La Hoya "clearly sealed" the victory over Quartey in the 12th makes me want to puke. Also, when people say "all you had to do was stand up to Tyson and he'd crumble". Geez, you think these pro fighters, world class contenders, would be a little tougher than to be spelled by the magic wand of fear that Tyson waved. "You have to take it from the champion and win impressively". No, you have to win more rounds. There's like a gazillion belts out there. "Champion" means less nowadays. Willie Pep won a round against Graves without throwing a punch.
