Is Hopkins underestimating the skillset of Kelly Pavlik? If so, in what particular areas?

I think it's safe to say Hopkins won't be underestimating Pavlik's power, youth, workrate, ect.

Dont think Bhop underestimates anyone, despite his mouth. Hes a good strategist its just whether he has the gas in the tank to see the plan out.

pavlik isn't just a dumb brawler.

he proved that 2nd time around against taylor.

hopkins needs to worry about his own output rather than what his opponent is gonna do. :bbb

Ah, that's a good point. In the end Hopkins might just be overestimating himself. We'll see. Still, he sees something in Pavlik apparently. Something that's there, or something that isn't. Or some of it that is, or some of it that isn't.

Bernard Hopkins just replied to Kelly's comments about his chin and his suggestion that it can be over quickly or stopped in the later rounds by saying that he's not afraid of his right hand power punch. Again, Bernard may be fooling himself as having the better jazz-like ability to improvise on the fly when he's essentially a workmanlike type fighter, very fundamentally solid and more strategically sound than versatile on the fly... I don't think Hopkins underestimates Pavlik's skill but he definitely believes that he can put him out of position and capitalize on the move and out of defense... That is pretty obvious reading in between his lines.

One of the things that has been alluded to alot is that Hopkins is going to try and get inside. Hopkins talked about this being the correct strategy for Calzaghe in a hypothetical Pavlik matchup.

Hopkins has proven even against Calzaghe that he can sense when they set up their shots and can duck underneath to come back up with his own blaster. Actually, that's how Hopkins got away from those Calzaghe's right hooks and on corners - bends his knees a bit and comes back up to counter shoot when they're out of position. I do believe Pavlik has poor coordination in small spaces and between his footwork and power shooting, drags his feet to get in position and power punch when he should be reaching his opponent's head with the snappy jab all the time... Bernard may be very well jump in inside with sneaky shots, rough him up when he's not feinting to his left like against Antonio Tarver.

Hopkins is probably one of the smartest fighters around, i doubt he will be underestimating Pavlik at all. This fight is all about Hopkins anyway, he has all the tools and know how to beat a fighter like Pavlik, but whether he can take a big shot at his age or when he gases and things are looking tough, its up to him to keep throwing punches and retain the will to win the fight.

I'm going to go out on a limb somewhat and say that Hopkins may be slightly, just slightly, underestimating Pavlik's handspeed and ability to get off a good shot - even possibly from short distance. After reviewing alot tape I'm fairly confident that Hopkins has a presumption that Pavlik may be excessively slow and feels at 43 he's at least equal with Pavlik, if not slightly faster, in overall speed. I do agree with the majority of those on the poll however. The weight will also be a factor when it comes to speed and mobility, obviously.

ON the contrary, he is always ultra cautious...
