Yes, that has to be the one. I was subscribed to all the mags mentioned in the first post at one point or another, but "Flash" was my favorite of the bunch. Not as much overall content as the other boxing mags of the time, but covered everything relevant in the sport without any fluff.

Anybody remember if Pedro Fernandez was a contributor to Flash? PF had a radio show called Ring Talk around that time (later 80s) I believe. Same question for Joe Koizumi.

All I know is Malcolm “Flash” Gordon was the editor/publisher and that Jack KO/JO Obermayer was a contributor.

    Ring
    KO
    International Boxing
    World Boxing
    Boxing Ilustratred

Even before they bought the Ring, one company owned KO, International Boxing and World Boxing

By ordering back issues of those three magazines, I gained an encyclopedic knowledge of late 70s and early 80s boxing.

But they also had cool older articles by well respected boxing jouranlists like Jimmy Cannon

I had the pinups of guys like Matthew Saad Muhammad, Alexis Arguello, Tim Witherspoon and Donald Curry on my wall.

My dad took one look, shook, his head, and walked out. LOL

    Hi Buddy.
Couldn't agree more, I bought the Boxing News every week, and I mean every week from 1968 to around the early 80s, the era of Graham Houston was imo the best there was, some of his preludes the week before a fight were fantastic, there were hundreds, the one that is burned in my memory forever was his breakdown of the upcoming Monzon / Napoles fight, truly a work of art, one phrase that still stands out was " Napoles will be weighing around 155 and hitting hard, very hard " add to that I also bought the Ring every month over the same period, again one cover lingers long in the memory, Basilio, bruised and bleeding, pleading with the ref, not to stop the fight with the bullish Fullmer, the headline being " Basilio a name for courage " not really sure what the esteemed @thistle was implying, but I respect his pen too much to argue, so yes BN @ Ring were my favourites, in that order.

@Mike Cannon I was simply meaning that with the amount of Newspapers available for choice, literally the world over, there is far, far more insight and great reporting available, especially in an age, where most people depended on the Main Newspapers, which employed famous & noted Top Sport/Boxing writers.

sure the Ring & BN provided much over the years, but they become a bit mundane & subjective to a lot of national sentiment & bend to the Boxing influencers.

Agreed 100%, just found some of these amongst my boxing magazines. The worldwide reporting was extremely in depth.

Back in the 1980s I walked into the Ring Magazine office in Manhattan when Bert Sugar was editor. The place was in a shambles. He was alone in there, reading mail from readers. Bert looked up when I approached him and muttered, "Fukking illiterates."

Our local gym still has many of those posters on the wall. It’s the same gym I used to run, basically, although it had to move locations and has taken on a new owner or manager (but it’s everything from the ‘old’ gym I used to run moved over, including the same ring, although over time some bags have been replaced). Those posters as well as many others from fights involving people who fought out of our gym just moved to the new location when it had outgrown the old space and needed to move.

    In order:
Boxing and Wrestling (from the '50s and early '60s)
Boxing Illustrated (from late '50s up to early '70s)
The Ring (up to Fleischer's death)
    Boxing News
    Boxing Blade

The publisher/writers I especially liked were Fleischer, Eddie Borden, Stanley Weston, and Robert Thornton. The last three bounced around between Boxing and Wrestling, Boxing Illustrated, and the Ring).
