Does anyone know the issues boxers have with Larry Merchant. Larry has been in the industry for quite sometime and seems to be respected. But boxers like Shannon Briggs and Ray Mercer didn't care for him and even went so far as to call him a racist. Mayweather had his words for him this weekend that were ignorant, but I dunno. According to Taking On Tyson book Mike didn't care fro him either. I know people on here know the scoop. Does anyone know what is going on? Why he is not liked or perceived as racist?
because he speaks his mind and tells it blunt. lots of people dont like that. and he is far from racist
More people chime in. I know there are some vets on here that know the real. Why do so many boxers not care for him?
Because he pulls no punches. He's hypercritical and sometimes lacks discretion with his comments. Sometimes I think he just tells it like it is, other times I think he just enjoys sticking it to people. Lots of writers are like that. Remember, he was a boxing journalist long before he was an announcer. Personally, I like the guy. But he has made me cringe a few times.
LOL!! Nothing personal Gamboa, i just want more people to answer. I didn't know why the strong dislike for Merchant. This has been in the air for many years.
No. Because below your avatar it reads "Newbie" and "Posts: 5" But nobody said you were unwelcome here :smoke
Here is a nice gem on Merchant, and an insight to his persona: his comments on Liston after he won the title, when he was editor of Philly news: "A celebration for Philadelphias first heavyweight champion is in order, Emily Post would probably recommend a ticket-tape parade. For confetti we can use shredded warrants of arrest"
Larry Merchant rubs some fighters up the wrong way because he takes his job seriously. He asks fighters difficult questions, questions audiences around the world want to hear answered. He also has no problems telling a fighter what he thinks, so if he disagrees with the decision he's liable to tell them so. Some fighters just want to hear, "that was amazing. How did you do it?" Larry don't play that.
He bothers me because he is biased and disrespectful to the fight game sometimes. The was he says things are condescending. You can tell it like it is without being disrespectful to fighters. You can tell if he likes a fighter or not by the way he commentates. He's not impartial. I like the fact that he is kind of a badass, but his commentating has deteriorated because of his self-assured attitude that his opinion is right and others are wrong.
He's talking about how he hates Merchant, Lampley, and Kellerman's elitist attitudes (which is true to some extent), but then goes on about how Kellerman isn't qualified to talk about boxing because he's never boxed before and because Kellerman's has only studied tapes and watched film. Right. Shannon - that means a majority of boxing fans aren't qualified in your book to give their thoughts on anything boxing-related. **** off with that. Klitschko-Briggs and Lewis-Briggs are on the "to watch list" for the week now.
