    1. Smarts (or ring intelligence, or ring generalship if you want). Smarts can make a fighter dominate someone who's much faster and stronger than him. You don't have to be lightning-fast, have a lot of heart or a solid chin or knockout power if you know where your opponent's gonna be at all times, know his exact reach down to the centimeter, know his patterns,... Basically, if you're 1 second ahead of him all the time, nothing can save his ass.

    2. Speed. Speed and finesse is much more important than power, the game is called "boxing", not "knockout" (ask Willie Pep or Maxie Rosenbloom). Combined with great intelligence, this pretty much always makes for a truly great fighter.

    3. Technique. As in any other sport, to master the technique to a degree others cannot is to be guaranteed a great career. Good upper body and head movement, good legs, precise movements and a great jab makes boxing look easy.

2 hugely important characteristics a great fighter needs are adaptability and the ability to find your best when faced with adveristy.

you can have all the skills you want when your fighting cab drivers, but if you fold like a lawn chair when the going gets tough or if you can't find a plan B when your plan A isn't working then your gonna get found out in the end.

    Just two-

    1) Mental strength.. whatever words you want to use. Courage, willpower, determination, etc. The ability to respond mentally regardless of internal pain or external pressure.

    2) Preparation. The committment with which you dedicate yourself to your craft consistently. (Diet, consistent training, improving your skills, giving your all in training, sacrificing relationship/family/friend time.)

Preparation might be looked on as a product of mental stregth, depending on how you look at it.

    I'd say so.

I would say while there is a relationship, they are not bound to each other, mental strength and preparation.

The best example to this contradiction is simple. Zab Judah. A fighter who obviously trains hard and consistently to achieve an impressive physique and physical performance level.... but lacks the strength of mind to produce/finish/assert himself when it comes time.
