The Kovalev vs Ward fights are mired in controversy and will be debated ad nauseum for generations, NSAC ruled 2-0 for Ward but what is your opinion on what the outcomes should have been?
I had the 1st one as a draw and felt Ward was on course to win the 2nd fairly, before the brutality began.
I have me a draw and NC. They are both still equal level fighters in my eyes even after the controversies. I just won't watch another Ward fight for the blatant low blows though.
114-113 Ward is the professional score for the first fight if you're judging each round with the exact criteria judges are given to score by. They judged that fight perfectly imo.
Inconclusive series. I have it as 1-0-0-1 for Kovalev, with the last fight being a DQ/NC or however you want to characterize it. As I have said elsewhere, this is what we know statistically for the 20 rounds the two fought. ===> 12-8 Kovalev rounds based upon CompuBox stat of total punches landed per round ===> Kovalev threw more punches ===> Kovalev landed more punches ===> Kovalev landed more power punches And yet, Kovalev was -1, -1, -1 on the judges' scorecards after the first fight and -1, -1, +3 on the scorecards after the 7th round of the second fight. To me, this is typical 'hometown' judging and reffing. It is what it is, but I would have been much happier if: - Meeks didn't stop the second fight following an illegal low blow - The second fight took place outside of the USA, with a non-USA ref and non-USA judges I can understand if Kovalev wants a third fight, but given all the information we have, that might not be in his best interest because of reffing/judging. Both fighters seem to be moving on. Kovalev will be back on HBO before the end of the year, and Ward sounds like he wants to move up to another division.
