Are you ******ed? How does getting knocked out cold prevent you from taking punishment? You risk brain damage every time you are knocked out. He is mentioned because he is well on his way to a Holyfield or a Ali.

Watching Roy's career is pretty tough now at the moment. Seeing Tyson fall so low and become a caricature of himself was pretty rotten as well.

I think the effects of the punishment these guys take don't always necessarily show up immediately. Right now, it only shows in his performance. As he gets older, who knows? Maybe his speech, motor skills, cognitive thinking? Anyway, even if he appears to be functioning normally from a mental standpoint, the guy is getting his ASS kicked BAD by more fighters than not. He doesn't even appear to be able to defend himself anymore.

I think Jones is headed in the wrong direction. But in Gregor's defense, one punch KO's are much safer than accumulated beatings. For example, MMA (as much as I hate to stand up for it) has not recorded a single death to date. Deaths in boxing are a regular occurrence. It is a tough problem to address as well, because the fighters don't literally die IN the ring, but rather the next day, or several days later. But it is always from long, drawn out beatings over several rounds.

Jones Jr. - He should have retired after the first Tarver match to be honest, sadly he didn't and allowed guys that aren't good enough to clean his locker room actually fight and beat him like Calzaghe.

Hopkins - Despite being old, he's not doing anything bad sticking around but if he keeps this up all the way eventually he will be FORCED into retirement. Even he admitted that he feels he needs to be forced out to finally be convinced to do it.

Holyfield - Nothing to say here since all is obvious but we all know he beat Valuev.

Meldrick Taylor - Shouldn't have continued after the screw job against the fraud Chavez. If you notice ANY step up fight Chavez has been involved in always ends in controversy or some kind of cheat down under, ALL his step up fights. There's a reason he's called the king of tomato cans, look at his record. His son is giving people an honest image so far.

    Ali

Tyson - Didn't want to fight even when he was in prison, coming out of prison broke is what forced him into the ring and forced him to sign the cheapest contract offered by Don King which didn't require too much gym work nor focus. That's the obvious reason why he turned down TRIPLE the amount of money offered in contracts by HBO and others.

    Mercer

There are many more, those are the ones I can remember now.

If you're talking about Calzaghe then I have no sympathy there whatsoever, even if his head is knocked off his body in the ring I won't have sympathy for that lying garbage. The guy is a great talent with a **** poor resume only delusional losers would be impressed by. Fact is if Lacy and Kessler didn't fly with their belts even those two fights wouldn't have happened so you get the idea.

I'm looking forward to see him try to cherry pick the easiest options he can upon return going back to his roots till he's forced to fight someone decent enough that ices his ass right there and then.

Most posters are listing Tyson. As a big Tyson fan, no one is more dissappointed about his performances vs Lewis and McBride (i give him a pass for williams b/c i don't care what anyone says he was kicking the living **** out of him even on one leg for a while). He even threw in a couple of clunker performances while still pretty young. But he wasn't a guy who was totally shot and suffering from diminished capacities like Ali or Louis (and to a lesser extent Holyfield). He still had plenty of ability to put on some excitement even in his last few years (hell he even made getting dominated by Lewis exciting at times). I'm glad he fought as long as he did as even the McBride fight was compelling to watch. I only wish he was more diisciplined in his approach as he could've fought more and did more in his mid to late 30's.

I feel similar about Jones. Aside from the Green fight, he still entertains and provides some excitement. Yes he's lost more than a step and definitely has chin question marks (let's see if anything comes of the green protest), but he's still a decent fighter.

Louis and Ali fighting was just sad, literally. Both guys clearly were hurting their health and were total shells at the end. Even other recent examples (lesser fighters obviously than louis and ali) like mercer, camacho, morrison, bowe (1 fight) are/were obviously just tyring to pick up a check and not much else (though mercer is game).
