What are the technical reasons that cause a boxer to move backwards?

Lets not talk about the obvious reasons like:
    - his opponent is stronger
    - he is hurt
    - he is better fighter moving backwards
    - his opponent is a better fighter moving backwards
    - he is minimizing his chances of being ko because he is winning the fight

Let say the plan of both fighters is to move forward, usually one resigns to moving backwards. Is he conceding to his opponent or nothing should be made of that when judging?

    I'll try some:

-Sensitivity to feints (or just falling for clever ones)
-Getting caught coming in with his offense consistently by counters or anticipatory leads
-A jab (or quick straight punches in general) forcing the opponent's weight backwards, stopping him in his tracks or edging him onto his back foot.
-Volume causing them to get crowded and making them slip punches while back-stepping to create space for comfort to throw that they're being denied.

If you're talking about judging a fight, it depends on their body language. A lot of times a fighter is trying to walk the more aggressive opponent into something by making them think they're "caving". Or they're trying to create room to punch. Or they're trying to regain control of the center. Ultimately, you can tell why they're moving a certain way by looking at who's getting hit cleaner, not the other way around.

It could simply be that Fighter A sees that Fighter B wont back down so he resorts to timing him with counters while walking backwards. Kind of like he is taking advantage of the situation

A fighter has a much longer reach and his opponent has worked his way to the inside.

  12. real talk, i pretty much used this blueprint against some big slow son of a ***** i fought in HS. tagged his ass all day long, dropped him about three times with counters. his frustration of not being able to hit me made it even easier.

dude came to school with his jaw wired the next day.

    good times :smoke

That's a good reason, but isn't the uncomfortable distance cause by your opponent? And if he keeps moving backwards to adjust the distance how should that be judged?

Maybe the aggressor uncomfortable constantly trying to reach you. If the mover is moving backwards and getting tagged, he's acting as the inferior ring general. If he's moving backwards and having offensive success, he's the one controlling the distance at his own preference. Like I said, you can tell why a person's moving by their body language, but more by who is hitting cleaner; you don't determine who is hitting cleaner (and therefore winning the round) by what direction they're stepping towards.

  15. yes, if you are not an aggressive type of fighter or if the guy obviously has more firepower than you. which is why some people choose to go backwards or use movement. it helps put you in a comfortable position and room to do your thing where you can control the pace of the fight. works well for the more athletic fighters. but it's hard work if your opponent is determined with stamina and good chin. you might gas out.
