Just garnish for the most part but still some fun.

Mine are a bit different. I like Ali’s talk “down” of Foreman during their face off. Scornfully looking George up and down like he was nothing, spouting vitriol all the while.

Meanwhile George is trying to keep fixed his patent, cool “I’m going to kill you” executioner face. But instead, Foreman is looking angrier and angrier by the second, about to seriously lose it, sneering and looking like he will either hit Ali right then and there or otherwise his head will explode.

Ali’s effort in that face off served a very practical purpose. Foreman tried to destroy Ali from first bell without reserve.

Also liked Ali and Joe’s face off, talking it up before Manila. It was like, “yeah, let’s do this one more time” - including the smack - both guys were smiling - all part of the show before getting down to the real business - and boy, did they what.

Imagine if Joe and Ali didn’t talk to each other during instructions - everybody would’ve thought “What’s up with the them? Maybe this fight’ll suck!” LOL.

Staredowns might occasionally have psychological value to fighters but probably most often not.

They can be fun and entertaining for us fans.

Thomas Hearns had one of the most frightening death stares I’ve ever seen, but Randy Shields had been around the block a time or two by the time they fought.

I remember reading his comment being asked about Hearns’ stare and he said something like, “I almost burst out laughing. I mean, what’s he gonna do? Hit me? He’s going to do that anyway.”

    Holyfield/Tyson 2.
That is the only time I recall being concerned for Mike Tyson in a boxing ring. He didn't want to be in there.

Then why bother to respond? The person asked a question. If you don't car about stare downs then move along to the next thread.

Quite liked a lot of Hearns, particularly against Benitez who had some good ones of his own. Hawk Time was OK too.

Hearns-Duran - The Hitman's gaze was ice cold.

Tyson-Ribalta - Jose was Mike's match during the staredown.

I just watched a great one. Bobby Chacon in his second fight with Ruben Olivares. Chacon is all smiles and then he goes to ring centre to meet Olivares. Here comes the stare down? Wrong. Olivares and Chacon stand next to each other while they have their picture taken and after the instructions Chacon gives Olivares a friendly ‘good luck’ pat on the arm.

Nonsense. I'd love for you to show me where exactly you saw this in the stare down PLEASE? You know most fighters put zero stock in the "stare down" and plain find it ridiculous theatrics it has no merit on anything.
