How can my initial thoughts about this fight be right now? Any thoughts I give you now on Cotto-Margarito will be that of hindsight.
The first thing that I think of about that fight is how amazed I was about the fact that Cotto could not hurt Margarito at all. He hit him with everything he got for 6 rounds and the guy just would not stop coming. Margarito was never seriously hurt in that fight. Even in the corner during the mid rounds, it seemed to me like Cotto was more worried even though he was winning the fight. It was almost like he couldn't believe how ineffective his punches were (this could just be my imagination). But yeah a rematch would end the same way IMHO.
Cotto went in there a little bit too cocky i think. but all in all he was winning the fight. He was doing what he needed to. then the plaster effect took a toll in my mind. when you get hit that hard everything in you just stops. i think that cotto has learned alot about that an his mentality and gameplan will change for the 2nd fight(thanks to steward). but overall i think cotto will win the second one. he wont try to outbrawl margacheato and he will use his skills which are far superior to his advantage. without that plaster advantage to wear cotto down an hurt him margacheato wont win this fight. he hasnt looked good in all three fights since the first cotto fight in 08.
I had Cotto winning the fight, but if it had of went the distance, it would have been a hard one to score, esp if cotto didnt go down in the last round
at the time of the stoppage i had the fight even i think... initial thoughts looking back are "god dam margo has granite in his chin and i wonder if the illegal wraps played a part.
I thought how can Margarito bang harder than Judah and Mosley , when he hadnt shown that before. But I also thought Margarito's chin was amazing that night.
I thought it was a great fight. I remember lots of f'n blood. Hadn't seen that much blood since Arce-Hussein I. Cotto was throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Margo. He may have had plaster in his gloves, but he also had plaster in his chin.
