I watched this fight live when I was not much more than a teenage dirtbag, and have never seen it again since. Only just acquired it on dvd, and plan to watch it this weekend. Can hardly remember it now. What is your overall assessment of that fight? What did it tell us about Naz? What did it tell us about McCullough? How did you score it (anyone keep their card)? :bbb
Although we knew it before the Naz fight, it showed us Wayne could really take a shot!! I didn't keep a card (or even remember scoring it) but I think it was pretty wide/ clear for Naz IIRC.
I wasn't into boxing when this was on, but watched it there a few weeks ago. Naz entrance was about the most interesting thing to see, he was at a canter but a bit cautious throughout. The tension with Ingle is mentioned in commentary too. McCullough just couldn't get close enough to land consistently and Naz landed plenty of power shots, more often than not.
It showed how limited McCullough was. He was very basic and had virtually no ideas. Hamed embarrassed him really. He was bouncing punches of his chin for fun. McCullough proved to have the best chin in boxing that night and in his subsequent career. However, having a great chin isn't enough. Darke and McCrory were tools during Nazs entrance. it was halloween night ffs and darke "oh this is not right.. people died in the right.. hes walking through a graveyard" lighten up ffs!!
Yeah I boxed on this bill in Atlantic city, Really did show us how good Waynes chin was also I think it was the start of the downward spiral from Naz.
It was a bit of a dull performance from Naz, but he got the job done against McCullough who was still a top fighter. I think I had it around 8-4 Naz, McCullough applied a lot of pressure but just couldn't connect with the shots he wanted. ATG entrance though :yep
McCullough scored a moral victory that night , remember when Naz was saying he would spark him in 1 round or something and he waas the first person to take Naz the full 12 I think , wasnt a great start to the Princes American carear
It was a under par, performance by Prince Naseem Hamed. His timing was way off, and so was his accuracy, but he STILL beat McCullough easy. I've always thought that Wayne McCullough was totally overrated and very average fighter.
Hamed beat Medina by rtd in the 11th round.Mcculough wasnt the first person to take hamed the distance but he broke hameds knockout streak which had extended back to 1994 and 18 fights.
i remember thinking it was a boring fight, well by Naz standards at the time,Wayne showed a great chin but was too slow for naz, great entrance though..
