Yeah he dominated almost every round, but it looked at times that his concentration lapsed and he ate some pretty flush shots. Morel's not a huge banger, either. If I was a fan of Mares I'd be slightly concerned against somebody with real pop.
My comments from another thread: He looked visibly stronger and more defined last night. The extra poundage will help him. I don't think he has enough power at world level. He seems to me to be a jack of many trades but a master of none, good power, good jab, good combinations, good body attack, good chin, but his style should be leading to knockout victories... I personally feel that if he can't hurt Donaire, Rigondeaux or Nishioka, which I don't think he can, he will be outboxed, which I feel he will. I enjoy watching him though.
Mares is a little over rated. He struggled a bit with Darchinyan, should have lost to Agbeko in their first fight, except for blind judges and a house referee robbing Agbeko of the W. There is a reason, Golden Boy moved him away from Moreno, and that is because the kid just isn't that good. Luckily for Mares, the two guys who would trash him at 122, won't be fighting him either, as Bob Arum has them. Golden Boy will probably find him more soft opposition to feed on, while they try to build him up as the next great Mexican Warrior(not)
I thought Mares looked sensational last night. Even better than in the 2nd Agbeko fight. The body work was great, as was his workrate and conditioning. If he doesn't get distracted by success he should have a very bright future.
I thought the draw was well deserved in the first agbeko fight as that's how I scored it, the fact that he was whining that he won didn't sit well with me. Your basically saying that because he took a few hits from Morel, a seasoned veteran that he isn't that good and overrated. This is the world class level, everybody takes a few hits, it doesn't change the fact that he looked great and pretty much took every round. I would really like to see him fight Moreno and the winner of that fight Donaire, but both Moreno and Mares should move up to 122 and get comfortable at the weight. The fact that he didn't KO anyone at 118 tourney tells me that no he isn't a p4p fighter but he is damn good and will be a pushover for no one.
I think he'll get beat if he fights a truely elite boxer puncher, he's too prideful and gets hit clean too much. I love his offense and his will but I can see Donaire knocking him out. Not saying he's "glass jawed" or anything, but you can't get hit that clean that much. All that said for someone to do it is an entirely different deal. I consider myself a fan, would just like to see him be a bit more responsible about his defense.
No, my thoughts of him being over rated are more based on his showings against Perez, Darchinyan, and Agbeko. Out of all the top guys who fought Darchinyan lately, Mares had the toughest time with him. Mares was clearly outboxed by Agbeko in their first encounter, but got the Golden Boy hometown cooking in his favor. While he did beat Agbeko in the rematch, several other guys would have also beat that wild, swinging for the fences with no technique version of Agbeko also. There was no reason to move Mares up without unifying with Moreno, as Mares won't get a fight with Donaire due to the Top Rank vs Golden Boy feud. They moved Mares up anyway so that Moreno wouldn't beat him. Instead Mares will be fed guys who are a big step down from his previous level of competition.
I think Donaire would beat him, not sure about knocking him out. Mares isn't a robotic, slow, midget, like Sydorenko, and Montiel are, and he has more wrinkles in his game than Darchinyan. I think Riggondeux would definitely put Mares to sleep though.
