was it corruption? was Taylor not able to continue? was the ref looking out for Taylors health or looking out for Chavez to get the W? there was only 5 sec left and Taylor was on his feet. what do u think about this stoppage?

It was bull**** in some capacity. Meldrick was ****ed, I am not debating that. JCC had beaten the living hell out of his body and he was hurt to the head from way too many flush counters, but the man had the fight in the bag, there were two seconds left when Steele called it and Steele was well aware that they were under the ten second mark, and no more damage could have been dealt that wasn't already done. Steele robbed him of his crowning moment of glory though we won't ever know if it was corruption or not. What we do know is that it was one of the worst judgement calls ever and clearly wrong. Also, Duva was just as guilty for telling his guy that he had to get out there and fight and win the last one big when the fight was already clearly going to be scored for Taylor.

This was the first fight I ever watched live and while it was truly an awesome bout it is significantly marred by what happened at the end and how Taylor's career panned out thereafter.

I think Richard Steele got a bit caught up in the moment and made a regrettably hasty decision. In hindsight, it is easy to say what should've happened or what we would have done in his place, but even referees are subject to adrenaline and sometimes make unwise, spur of the moment decisions like everyone else. Unfortunately for Meldrick Taylor, it robbed him of a deserved victory against an ATG.

Bad stoppage, but I don't know if it was a corrupt stoppage.

I can't say if there was corruption, but I think it's understandable he made the right call. I think it leads to a general question: if a fighter shouldn't continue, but you know the fight is about to end, should that effect your decision, or should the damage warranting a TKO be considered the same throughout?

He made the right call. Steele's main priority was to protect the fighters, and he had a fighter who could not continue, and showed absolutely no sign of being able to. It would have been nice if he had known how little time was left and weighed that into into his decision, but the main point is he had a fighter in front of him that was not fit to continue. He did the right thing.

I agree with the stoppage, i mean taylor was soooooo messed up and non responsive. At any point in the fight if one of the fighters looks helpless its the ref's job to stop it. even if it is with 2 seconds left.

I hate the stoppage. My mind will never change on that. I'm not saying the ref didn't do his job either. Taylor was obviously coherent because he was looking at his trainer. With 2-3 seconds left, I feel Taylor was robbed of the greatest win of his career.

to those saying taylor didnt respond - go back and watch the tape. you can see him nodding when steele asks him if he can continue.

I don't understand how anyone could say it was a bad stoppage. The ref asked him twice, "Are you OK?" Meldrick failed to answer him when all he had to do was say, YES.

If anyone is to blame it's Meldrick and his camp, not the ref. Meldrick failed to answer Mr. Steele because his brainless corner was distracting him with nonsense. Tough cookies.
