i dont care what nobody says if i was the ref and there is only TWO seconds left and the fighter is on his feet, Im gonna let the fight finish even if the dude is half dead. its the princible. it had to be corruption. DON KING was Chavez promoter and he was a great ticket seller. it was a **** stoppage.

You dont understand boxing, its that simple.

Richard Steele has actually explained his stoppage and explained it eloquently.

A good referee is looking at the fighter as he administers the counts.

As he looks at the fighter as he's counting, the ref is more than just using that time to count, he's actually judging the condition of the fighter.

During the count, Steele had already determined by the zoned out look in Taylors face that he was in bad shape.

Let me tell you something. Its a courtesy for Steele to have asked Taylor if he was OK (he did it twice actually) Steele could have determined Taylor had had enought without asking Taylor if he was OK.

Note to those who fight in this forum. If you go down and are somewhat hurt from the knockdown......If you're good to go, dont wait for the ref to ask you "are you OK"........make ****ing sure he knows you're OK by letting him know you're good to go without him having to ask you anything.

I see it all the time with fighters who are knocked down. When they're coherent, more often than not they're up and already indicating to the ref without being asked that they're good to go. :deal:deal:deal

"Femtoseconds":rofl:rofl:rofl......get a clue. Steele did'nt have to give Taylor anything. Had Taylor been good to go, he'd have been signalling to Steele as soon as he got up he was ready to finish.

Lets get real here. During the count and when Steele asked Taylor if he was ok. Taylor did'nt know where the **** he was at.

I agree with the ref. He ain't a timekeeper and Taylor was ****ed up bad. he came so close to winning but at the same time look at the damage it caused him. Meldrick was never the same again

It's the complete opposite of Bute Andrade when you think of it. If they let Taylor take the win everyone would have complained that Chavez got shafted you can't win!!!

fair stoppage. ref should not take unto account how much time is left. if he felt that the boxer's situation is worse already and needed to be stopped, then so be it. a life is more important than any decision.

The safety of the fighter is first priority not how many seconds are left in a fight.

Dude, nodding and having your head loll around because you don't have control of it any more are two different things.

It sucks it was stopped, but taylor was out of it. He was out on is feet as much as any fighter I have ever seen.

He was a right mess. the fight should have been stopped sooner. The beating he took ruined his career.

ANYONE who thinks this was a bad stoppage, keep in mind taylor was basically beaten into mental ******ation in this fight and was never the same.

he was ****ed up in there, to put it mildly

Taylor's speech was alright for awhile after this. He just fought on too long, in fights and the gym.

The beating took something out of him, but he was still a world class fighter for a couple more years and had the 2nd best win of his career a year after the Chavez loss.

I can't complain about the stoppage too much when Steele asked him twice and Taylor didn't respond. I've always put a lot of blame on Duva as I really think he was distracting Taylor when Steele asked him questions. Duva also was most likely part of the decision to fight Norris in May 1992, a shameless "cash-out" fight after Taylor's struggle with Brown.

When it comes to Taylor and his downfall/decline, I dislike Lou Duva.

I think that it was a little bit of everything you state :). Steeler wanted to stop the fight probably to give the win to Chavez. In the same time if Taylor had said I'm ok he was never going to stop the fight. Taylor was beaten, out on his feet and maybe because of Duva screaming like crazy he could not answer the question TWO times.

About his safety sure the fight was almost over but Steeler didn't know exactly how much time was left. Imagine Chavez making the superman punch from the uncle Roger fight in the dying second he could've hurt him pretty bad.

Speaking about Duva it was amazing how he lied shamelessly afterwards that he instructed Taylor to dance like Ali in the last round.
