There are only three welters in the current BoxRec top 50 p4p. (#7 Jaron Ennis, #11 Devin Haney, and #21 Brian Norman Jr.)

Feels like maybe an historic low?

The fact that Haney only debuted in the division in his last bout and is 2nd or 3rd best kind of says it all. Ennis and Norman Jr. are pretty good but probably the only elite active natural welters.

Probably the weakest it has been for 20 years, but some 140 fighters might move up and inject a bit of life into it, though, the likes of Azim, Hiraoka, Teo, and Gary Russell. I think Norman will go on a run and pick up a few of the belts once Ennis goes to 154, but definitely not the most exciting weight class at the moment.

I haven't really been paying attention very well to current boxing (hence the theme of my most recent threads) but from what I gather it seems like other historically rich divisions are struggling too. I haven't heard many good things about the current middleweight division either. Are the in between divisions at least doing well?

EDIT: To be fair to the welterweight division, boxrec ratings in general are weird. They have Mclarnin as the number 2 p4p boxer of all time. I like Mclarnin but he's not top 10 p4p all time let alone number 2.

And really, you have to scrape pretty deep into the barrel to find a #4 at 147lbs.

The winner of Polanco-Randall? The winner of Catterall-Eubank? Crocker? Giyasov? Santillán? Raúl Curiel? All of these guys have a case for being in the discussion and none is even close to being on anyone's top fifty p4p list.

It's not in a great place especially with Ennis moving up. I was impressed with Norman Jr's last KO, hopefully he can keep the momentum going against Haney, otherwise imagine a welterweight division with Haney and Romero as two of the belt holders. That would be a dire situation

Let's see, MW also currently has three guys in the BoxRec top 50 pound for pound:

#18 Zhanibek Alimkhanuly, #19 Erislandy Lara, and #26 Chris Eubank Jr.

I'd say Ennis/Haney/Norman is a much stronger trio, with 42 year old Lara having one foot out the door at this point and CEJ having no business being rated as high as 26th p4p. At the risk of downplaying the freaking IBO titlist. :sisi1
