What are your thoughts on the Leonard Hearns stoppage?

    I thought it was a bit late

    Hearns was badly hurt in the 13th round. He was staggering a lot. His legs were gone.

    Yes, but we've seen fights where guys looked like they were taking their last breath. Towards the end of round 9 in Gatti Ward it looked like Gatti was just going to collapse on the canvas. And he continued the fight.

    Now consider the magnitude of the Hearns Leonard fight and the fact that Hearns was ahead on the cards. The ref stopped it.

    Each stoppage gets assessed according its own merits. Hearns had been battered throughout 13th and was shipping a lot of punishment in the 14th. Leonard was swarming him and Hearns was having an increasingly difficult time defending himself or keeping him at bay.

    Stoppage was fine, under those circumstances.

    A fair stoppage and actually quite a brave decision by Davey Pearl, considering the magnitude of the fight.

    That stoppage took serious stones because like you said the magnitude of the fight. In addition, Hearns had not really been hit flush in the 14th with a massive punch. The ref must have thought it was imminent.

    Still given the magnitude of the fight Hearns deserved to be beaten to a pulp or put to sleep. If he so chose. Because he was ahead on the cards.

    It was a good stoppage. Tommy had nothing left. Hence he never fought at Welter again.
