I dont know if this has been done , probably has , not recently though. Mine is probably - 1. Duran 2. Leonard 3. Gans 4. Whitaker 5. Ortiz 6. Williams 7. Mosley 8. Brown 9. Buchanan 10. Ambers My top 7 are the ones that i wouldnt like to move , the next three could be any of the other ATGs at 135 , i still think i would have Joe Brown though. Just my opinion , any lists . . .
So, h2h you put Mosley higher right? (I pretty much agree with your list..) I just think because of his natural ability he would be pretty rough head to head for anyone, even more so at welterweight, i wuold put im in top 5 head to head, but 7 overall looks about right imo..(He did dominate his division, it may not have been the best lightweight division, but Durans comp. at lightweight wasnt too impressive either i dont think..
This is my favourite division but I always struggle to rate the fighters within it. I never know what criteria to use. Give me some and I'll have a go.
Oh i agree with you on your point there about mosley h2h , i actualy thought he was better h2h at 135 than 147 though , thats a very debatable argument though . The thing with Duran for me is - i seriously think he was as close to a perfect fighter (in his prime) there has ever been . Obviously there was Robinson . But Duran was the best blend of offense and defense i have ever seen . There have been some great fighters who are defensive geniuses that can stand right in front of a guy and not get hit (like James Toney) , and these fighters can land some tremendous counterpunchers. But when Duran did it , he was landing devastating hooks and uppercuts at the same time . He could walk straight forward , standing upright and not get hit and knock someone out at any point of the fight. Him and his oponent would both throw a 5 punch combo, his would land and the other guy's wouldnt. I dont wanna get carryd away , because i will sound biased and im not. My point though- i think he was the best blend of offense and defense ever. On your h2h point , i wouldnt like to do a h2h list , because any of these great warriors could have their day (with styles coming into it) , but i agree with mosley looking great at this weight , really great
I think i tend to give the most credit to achievement at the weight , but if a fighter has simply performed brilliantly at the weight in a short time then that gets credit too . But i still give the most credit to the real achievers at the weight
Yeah, hard to do when i have Mosley in my avatar and Duran is in yours haha.. I agree with you on Duran as well though, he was so relaxed it was unreal, his blend of offense and defense like you said of course... Even when he was older, in that sparring video with Nigel Benn he still looked good, and insanely relaxed of course.. (Im sure Benn wasnt going 100%, but Duran wasnt even punching, i think he threw something like 2-5 punches in that..)
I was just on youtube watching a mosley highlight a bit earlier , he was amazing at 135 , when you see him like that , its hard to imagine how he got beat, just because , your thinking to yourself - ' how can anyoune take that punch!!' I tinspired me to do this thread !!!
Yeah at lightweight not many could take his punch.. He was an underrated puncher at 147 and 154 in my opinion.. But i think when he moved to 147, he didnt look far behind Meldrick Taylor or Roy Jones when it came to hand speed.. Weird how he got faster when he moved up.. But watch some of his early 147 fights, he was faster, and he was still crazy fast at lightweight heh, but his overhand/looping right was even more dangerous at lightweight...(As you can see when he knocks a couple people out so bad with it, they fall on top of him and he slides out from under :rofl ) I also think his left hook to the body was a little better than people notice.. But of course Mosleys biggest weakness is his stubornness, he cant outbox many people, but he wants to fight, he cant ever just stick to a game plan for a whole 12 rounds, he has to turn it in to a fight eventually, which is why pure boxers will have as number moreo ften than note...(Forrest, Winky, ****, and Cotto on this one i'd say, even though he could have got the D on that one......) On top of that, he can't handle a rangey, stiff jab....(Forrest, Winky ;-)....)
His bodypunches i think were great , the left sort of came from underneath and hit them right on the spot , realy precise. The overhand right is still a very godd punch for him now i think , he landed that well against Cotto early on. (ive only seen the early rounds though)
I felt he rocked Cotto with it almost every time he hit them, or I could tell he was at least KNOCKING THE **** out of him with it, maybe im nuthigging..but it sure looked like it..
Who do you think won it , seriously , i need to see it properly and score it. I hear arguments for Mosley a lot though
Ill just keep my mouth shut about it, like i said, hes in my avatar, easy to get called a nuthugger.. I felt he at least got the draw though..
You thought that he won then !! I'll watch it sometime soon and let you know if your'e a nuthugger !!
-level of skill -dominance in the division -quality of competition -win/loss ratio -record -longevity -performance after prime (?) bonus: how well the man fared in higher divisions. This should always be a bonus when measuring status... Please don't -and I know you won't- include such hot air balloons as "impact on the sport". It has no bearing on the measures of a true analyst so let's leave that for Time and Life magazines.
