Oscar De La Hoya has losses to Mayweather, Pacquiao, Hopkins, Trinidad and Mosley. That's hard to top in the modern era. Fritzie Zivic might just be the all timer at this. Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong, Charley Burley, Lou Ambers, Jake LaMotta, Billy Conn and Beau Jack. Rosenbloom also deserves a mention. He lost to Harry Greb, Mickey Walker, Jimmy Slattery, John Henry Lewis, Young Stribling and Jack Delaney.
In my opinion, Jeff Clarke should always be mencioned in this discussion. Loss to Sam Langford, Sam McVey, Joe Jeanette, Harry Wills, Kid Norfolk, Jack Thompson, Battling Jim Johnson, Dixie Kid and to Willie Meehan.
Johnny Risko, with losses to Tunney, Schmeling, Sharkey, Baer, Loughran, JH Lewis, McTigue, Slattery, Delaney, Walker and Stribling.
Relative to their total number of losses, Tommy Gibbons will be hard to top. He only ever last 5 x times: Harry Greb x 2 Billy Miske DQ Jack Dempsey for the HW title - bear in mind Gibbons was a LHW Gene Tunney - in Tommy's final contest
Frankie Wallace lost to 12 different HOFers - which I think will be hard to "beat": Bob Montgomery x 3 Sugar Ray Robinson Tony Canzoneri Lou Ambers x 3 Jack "Kid" Berg Pedro Montanez Wesley Ramey Benny Bass Baby Arizmendi Petey Sarron Kid Chocolate x 2 Freddie Miller
Shane Mosley has lost to Vernon Forrest, Winky Wright, Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao, and Canelo. Thats quite the list of name opponents he’s fought.
Love the topic and there’s some interesting lists here. But it made me think of an observation someone made to me years ago — boxing is probably the only sport where many are rated by who they lost to more than who they beat. Whether that’s sizing up some current fringe contender or some past great, a lot of the discussion will center around ‘he gave so-and-so a good fightin defeat.’ Not saying such measuring sticks are wrong, but it’s different than other sports in that regard. You never hear about a tennis player who never won a major in terms of ‘yes but look who he lost to in the quarterfinals each time he was eliminated.’
Juan Laporte has fought and lost to: Salvador Sanchez Eusebio Pedroza Wilfredo Gomez Barry McGuigan Julio Cesar Chavez Azumah Nelson Kostya Tszyu Holman Williams has fought and lost to: Herbert Lewis Hardwick Charley Burley Eddie Booker Lloyd Marshall Archie Moore Marcel Cerdan Jake LaMotta
Eddie Cotton: Archie Moore, Harold Johnson, Bob Foster, Jose Torres, Mauro Mina (2), Roger Rouse (0-2-1), Wayne Thornton (3), Johnny Persol (1-1), and Irish Bob Murphy. He defeated a lot of guys too! Lots of close decisions.
The Fraziers only lost to ATGs. Joe’s only losses were against Muhammad Ali and George Foreman while son Marvis, only ever lost to Larry Holmes and Mike Tyson.
