"Gibbons was a wonderful boxer-he would haved knock(ed) Rocky out."

Really over the top self-serving comment by Tunney. Who was the best heavyweight Gibbons actually knocked out? That he would outpoint Marciano is somewhat of a stretch. That he would knock him out seems to really go over the line.

Jim Jeffries was quoted as saying Tom Sharkey would have flattened Tunney in one. The further back you go the greater they were.

"a subtle way of really raising himself"

    What is subtle about it?

That is why Willard hit harder than Dempsey

and Carnera hit harder than Louis.

Look at all the quotes from Louis on how hard Carnera hit.

*In fairness, common sense does point to a bigger man hitting harder, but something seems off about that if you look at actual history. Balance, coordination, torque, timing, etc. must play a very important role in all of this.

The bottom line with Marciano is that he was a very, very hard puncher for his size. He was on the small end of the heavyweight division but still managed to run up a KO percentage which I think has still not been equaled by a heavyweight champion. And this KO percentage held up against his top competition. Most of the men who have come close to his KO percentage were men who were big for their era and generally had reach and weight advantages.

That's right. It stands to reason that bigger fighters hit harder but being able to land it against faster, more experienced opposition goes further. It only counts if you can"one time" great fighters.

    Merry Christmas.:good

Five of his top stoppages were against men past their primes, two of them nearly 40.Marciano was undeniably a heavy puncher, but I believe him to have been an accumulative stoppage puncher for the most part.
Because of his extreme physical condition he was able to carry his power throughout a fight and still be swinging for the fences in the last round, every punch he threw was a heavy one and he kept coming at you .He systematically broke men down. That's why he ruined so many fighters it was the prolonged beatings that left them diminished.
