What boxers did Larry Holmes consciously and deliberately avoid, if any?

I honestly don't remember.

It was close. I ve always seen Williams as getting it by a couple of rounds at least. Larry was lucky.

Larry Holmes= ducked blank contracts, options with Don King and 50% of his purses being jacked.

Dokes and Page were not especially hardpunchers anyway.

 

That was when he was with Don King. When he had a chance to gain his independence he did what anyone would do he got free. Doesn't mean he wouldn't listen to an offer from King or fight again under his banner. Holmes is a business man. After 18 months out of the ring basically retired he fought Tyson because Don King kept pestering him. When the # were right it happened.
Just common sense. If he was specifically worried about a Dokes or Page etc he probably wouldn't have jumped in with a raging Tyson without a tuneup.

 

Trevor Berbick beat both Page and Thomas, plus Weaver knocked the crap out of Coetzee and drew with Dokes. Hell, David mah fah BEY beat Page.

 

ST Gordon beat Berbick and was beaten by Eddie Lopez who was beaten by Tucker. Tucker lost to Lewis so we’re safe in saying Lewis had the better resume.

 

Bowe beat Dokes in 1 round.

 

If you look at it the right way, concerning the time frames for each fighter, it is easily understandable. If not, you make a mess of it.

 

And also consider who Holmes wouldn’t be fighting if he fought someone else instead.

On the same night, in the same ring, on the same card, Trevor Berbick beat Greg Page. Now if Larry had fought Page that night instead, people would say he was ducking Cooney.

If Greg was so all-fired-up about fighting Larry, and so worthy, he would have cruised past Trevor the way Larry did. But of course he didn’t. Not Larry’s fault … maybe Greg would have been next had he won.

 

He went to Tyson beltless, that's why.
There's no way a champion who picks Cobbs, Frazier's son, a LHW and some random guys nobody remembers for his title defenses would be willing to face Tyson. Unless the fee covers for the loss of earnings of those garbage title defenses.

Bit random but this is how i scored their fight last time i watched it, for me it's how many rounds you thought Williams won in the first half of the fight. That determines who you thought won the fight. Because some of them rounds were tough to score.

 

Williams won many of the rounds out of the first 9, but faltered many times (and sometimes badly) in the last rounds. I always gave it to Holmes by two points.

 

Yeah i can definitely see that the 1st round was somewhat close, with Holmes landing the best punch of the round. And the 3rd round was razor thin close, like i said it really depends how you score the first 8 rounds or so, because i thought the later rounds were pretty easy to score but the early rounds were very debatable.
