What boxers you see becoming great trainers?

Think nothing illustrates your point better:

When Willie Pep was at Stillman's Gym, you could count on practical jokes and a florid Lou Stillman. But, Willie could do that because he was a dream in the ring. It was a religious experience watching him.

He took nothing serious. NOTHING. He came to the gym mostly, I’m convinced, to have a good time. It was an extension of being at the track or playing cards.

Pep never learned anything; it was all God given. His feet didn't touch the canvas. He was all but invisible.

That 's the Pep I'd always seen at the height of his career.

After he hung’em up, briefly, he tried his hand at training.

I was at the 5th St. Gym in Miami. Willie was in the corner of a big, beefy heavyweight.

He was screaming at the heavy from the ring apron, getting redder and redder in the face. This wasn't stand-up comic Willie: This was more Vince Lombardi-Bobby Knight.

When the round ended, Pep went berserk -- attacked his fighter, screamed at him, punched him, whipped him with his pork-pie hat, kicked him in the shins; he had to be dragged off by three cornermen.

Pep just couldn't get it in his head that what he did, as natural as breathing, nobody else could.

 

Roberto Garcia, Nasim Richardson, John David Jackson, Uncle Roger....

 

none. it takes a lot of ego to become a great fighter. all of that ego has to be thrown out the window to become a great trainer. that's easier said than done.

 

:deal Tho not considered great, I still think McGirt, Garcia, and obviously Uncle Roger were very good fighters, but will be better known as great trainers.

 

they were all very good fighters...i'm not convinced any of them are very good trainers.

mcgirt inherited finished products in gatti, tarver and malignaggi. didn't really improve on them imo.

garcia inherited finished products in nonito, rios, ortiz, margarito and maidana. mikey garcia was trained by his pops up until recently.

uncle roger inherited floyd jr....a finished product.

someone mentioned john david jackson...i've not seen him with a fighter he developed either.

 

I'd say Johnathon Banks is getting a head start.

You look at Freddie Roach and Kevin Rooney as fighters, to name two, and no one would have said 'there is a future great trainer.' But generally it is guys who have to learn everything rather than those who have natural ability who tend to be good teachers -- because they had to be good learners.

i think paulie malanagi would be a very good trainer guy seems to know his stuff so would andre ward.

 

I don't think Floyd would make a great one on one trainer. I don't think he has the patience for it. I think that he could put the right people together IE trainer and fighter but he is not a hands on guy. Mares would make a good trainer.

When Ward is working HBO broadcast team it sure seems like he has a certain way he'd see things done by fighter X and he says it in such a way that I could see him as a coach very easily.

Of course all of the great fighters mentioned in this thread would have the knowledge, but with what facility can they transmit it?

Each case is different.

 

Contrary to most, I believe De La Hoya would be awesome if he wanted to do it and put some time into someone (if he wasn't the richest man in boxing already). That dude is very smart and knows boxing as good as anyone.
