"Q" Street, probably isn't accepted by the "PC" Crowd today.

Always liked Q***r street. Also "in the pink".
Hey Red? Though not slang remember towards the back of each Ring Magazine there would be several pages of breakdowns of recent fights, most of them bouts featuring mid-range talent, journeyman type fighters?
My late friend and I used to read them and crack up because most of the writers weren't exactly trained scribes.
I remember two (I'm laughing now just thinking about them):
"...by the sixth round of this pier-sixer both fighters looked like they were auditioning for a bad ketchup commercial..." :)
"...by the end of the 5th (so and so) was ready to go having had his jaw broken in the previous round. In the sixth (so and so) took another huge uppercut breaking his other jaw (do we have two?) He looked at the ref and said, 'no more, no more I...can't...continue'!" :)

RIP my friend, you've heard them all. The words B()LL &h^t come to mind after some of the decisions were announced in 2017.

You never hear of a fight being a “gee” or a “gee-up” anymore. A “send up” then “put up job” replaced the term “gee”. They still go on of course but I don’t think the live fight crowd is so knowledgeable now to notice or care since many fans only assemble for the main event.

A gee or a gee-up was a bout where the boxers were staging a kind of friendly sparring session to last the distance, but making it look good. Sometimes they would stage the whole fight and go for real on the last round. But usually one or the other would accuse his opponent of going for real anyway and genuine fighting would breakout. But interestingly, a gee was always better entertainment than the real thing! They were either so bad it was good or they were so good it was more dramatic. I love them.

Most journeymen will ask their opponent to go easy on them because they’re fighting next week. They know if it’s a fight down the card there is a lot more chance to get away with stuff.

We ALL miss John Mendoza! So many stories from his past! His recollections from his dad taking him to Skillman's gym in the 40's to see SRR! "Dad, why is the center ring vacant? That's reserved for SRR whenever he decides to show up". Ray would show up, park his pink Cadillac in a no parking zone; no white cop EVER gave him a ticket! He was magic and an idol to everyone!

    Amen.

    John Garfield. A.K.A. Joe Rein.

A gentleman, a scholar who witnessed more than any boxing historian could hope, and one heck of a boxing writer.
