I remembered a couple of years ago a thread similar to this one asking about the status of Mexican boxing. And here we are Mexico got out of the slump. And has plenty of Champs now to go around.
Puerto Rico is just going through a slump, but somewhere there's a kid or two training hard, the kind that is not bred for the Olympics but as a professional and he will come up to the ranks in no time.
Whats funny - how many world champions you expect from an island of 3 million people?

And by the way Cuba is way bigger than Puerto Rico. In Cuba boxing is more of a way out, in Puerto Rico is more of a choice, you either like it and dedicate yourself to it or you go play another sport.

I know this thread was written with an agenda in mind but I figured I reply. Puerto Rico' s boxing history is rich and am not even talking of the boxers of rican descent in the states.
By the way, isn't the third highest paid boxer a puerto rican? And he is not even a champion lol.

They have good prospects, what they need to do is wait a year or two and they will develop into world class boxers, every ocuntry goes thru these bad times, but boxers are always coming up

Just look at Verdejo, he is their best prospect, also Jonathan Gonzalez went too early against a big puncher in Segura

Miscommunication. I like PR fighters and I like PR. Although there have been sincere posts on here the OP is a wind up about how there are no belt holders from Puerto Rico currently. Threads with OPs like that usually get deleted for obvious reasons. Things did not work out for this guy's alt though

Anyway, I don't think cotto will beat sergio unless he has completely deteriorated but I would love to see him be the linear champ. Cotto is one of first guys I followed throughout his progression.

Puerto Rico has Dannny Garcia who based on achievements may well be number 3 in the pound for pound ratings right now.

    That's an interesting idea.:think

They could get good sparring amongst each other, and develop better strategies.

I still feel cuban trainer- Pedro Diaz would be a good asset to PR boxing.

Cotto should try to get Diaz to move to PR and start a boxing gym there.

That's what they said about Dulorme.

Dulorme was being hyped up as the next Puerto Rican star, and he dissapointed.

Puerto Rico is not a nation.

Its an island, territory of the US.

and this thread is not BS.

Its the truth, that they have no world champions.

All , Im asking, is what can be done to help PR boxing, because they're going through a drought, and boxing is kinda boring now.

I remember that thread a few years ago.

But, Mexico had about 10 world champions then, which is why I was surprised there was a thread concerning Mexico's boxing.:patsch
The problem then, is that Mexico's world champions were being underexposed, because Affirmitive Action was given in favor of other fighters from other nations.

PR has better access to Professional boxing, than Cuba does, so it would seem logical that PR have more world champions that Cuba does.
But that's not the case, because Cuba currently has more world champs than PR.

"Currently" yes, Puerto Rico is going through a slump right now. What you have to look at, Cuba invest a lot in their boxing amateur program, so big in fact, that of the thousands of amateur boxers that try out only a few makes it to the olympic team. Puerto Rico is like the US in terms of gyms, kids try it and they either like it or try out for other sports. Is just another sport.
The professional system that they have, has been working for them for years so I dont see why change it. A few great boxers has come out from that system.
Hopefully is a matter of times for things to start improving. Time will tell.

Also although Cuba's amateur system is great, I dont enjoy too much that style of fighting in the pros.
