that's about as even handed a look at Griffith as I've ever seen. Rock solid chin but could be hurt. Involved in a few great trilogies. made hats. Disliked shirts and quick knockouts.
A good example of a complete fighter.....could jab, box pretty well, was a great body puncher, a good puncher as well, etc...
He was a very good fighter, who would be feared if he was fighting today. He has a sad story, though. You should watch "Ring of Fire". It's an excellent documentary about him. The ending made me shed a tear.
Red Cobra, that ko by Carter was no FLUKE. Emile had been recently voted some outstanding fighter award and was due to get it right after the fight. I think he was trying to prove he was worthy and decided to 'fight' Carter which was a BAD idea (for MOST guys). He got caught and hurt early and Ruben was a violent puncher / finisher. He said BEFORE the fight it was a" BIG mistake putting that little man in the ring with me" Emil was a good technician and did have a little pop, but not the best makeup for a world-class fighter. Michael Moorer was like that, Atlas had to 'challenge' him during his fights. Paret called Emile gay, because of his high-pitched voice and he worked in a woman's hat shop owned by his manager. he paid for it with his life, BUT, what a lotta' people forget is, JUST before he fought Emile, Paret fought the bruising, dirty, relentless MW, Gene Fullmer and suffered a BRUTAL beating and should've NEVER fought Emile. His peeps were very 'brave'.
Well, we can debate about it being a "fluke" or not, but I maintain that that result would have never happened again. Griffith became a much better fighter since that meeting with Carter..beating a superior fighter to Carter in Dick Tiger as proof. Not onlyt would the ko not be repeated, but Griffith would have avenged the defeat via a decision, IMo.
Clancy said he was better than SRR which is a bit loco of Gil. Also said he was the greatest trainer. Would obey every command.
At welter, Luis Rodriquez was virtually Griffith's equal. Strange....Curtis Cokes was slightly better than Rodriquez....but Cokes lost to fighters who Griffith beat. Gil Clancy wouldn't let Griffith fight Cokes.
One of my closest friends was a sparring partner for griffith for several fights in the late 1960s, early 1970s. Good fighter, deserves a lot better than a bunch of pinheads that haven't won two real world title cracking gay jokes. One of the top fighters of the last 50 years.
